Requirements for Recording Youth Member’s Images

Cyber safety is critical and a shared responsibility of 4-H staff, volunteers, parents, and members. As the California 4-H YDP expands the delivery of 4-H learning in virtual environments, ensuring the safety of our youth members is critically important. As such, a guidance document has been developed and is posted on the 4-H Virtual Toolbox: Virtual Management page for staff and volunteers to use.
Tips and Best Practices for Zoom Club & Project Meetings
As we navigate the new restrictions for in-person meetings, I’ve had several club leaders reach out to our office asking for ways to keep our youth engaged in our virtual meetings.

I want to share some ideas to help club and project leaders. If you have additional ideas please email me at damariscal@ucdavis.edu and I would be happy to share with the rest of the club leaders.

Improving Engagement:
  • Provide prizes or incentives to the members who have their cameras on. Example: “If you have your camera on, you will enter a drawing at the end of the meeting for an awesome 4-H Frisbee.”
  • Timed Challenges: Let youth know you started a timer and they have to get their answers in time. Example: “Trivia Time! You have 60 seconds to list as many of our club projects as you can!”

  • Movement Challenges: Take breaks where you lead stretches, dances, play “Simon Says” Example: “We are gonna have a dance break for 1 minute, you don’t have to have your camera on if you don’t want to, but you have to be silly and dance.”

  • Zoom Around The Room: a game where you describe objects and members have to put the object in front of the camera. Usually the first 2-3 members who present the item, get the “point.” You can play this game multiple times during the meeting, to keep members alert.

  • Sing Alongs, Cheers, Virtual Handshakes: Add your own twist to start and/or end the meeting with energy. - Make a Theme: “Funny Hat Day,” “Rep Your Team Day,” “Pajama Day,” “Stuffed Animal Day.”

  • Offer Off-Line Challenges: Tell youth to draw, write, sketch, or reflect on their favorite moment of the meeting/week over a short period of time. Assign “Homework” to draw, write, sketch, etc.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone found a way to celebrate safely and with at least some of the people you care about! I have to be honest, I was as pleased as anyone to say goodbye to 2020 and the multitude of hardships it brought our way. But I do want to take a moment to reflect on the positive things that came from it as well. I learned (sort of) how to use Zoom, we have learned to implement new ways of working, playing, and socializing. We taught more people there is a right way to wash our hands (I’m smiling) and we saw once again, how resourceful our community continues to be. I’m looking forward to the new year as an opportunity for continued growth, ingenuity, and camaraderie. We are all forever changed, but it wasn’t all bad.

Presentation Day, Fashion Revue, Teen Events, Livestock Judging? We are looking forward to our old favorites being reinvented or reformatted, and I am learning to embrace ongoing change. It isn’t easy. But even I can learn by doing! The 4-H program taught me that. Our members and volunteers show me that every day!

Thank you to everyone who managed to figure out registration in this awkward year, and to every volunteer and supportive parent out there who keep helping out youth members learn by doing. I look forward to the time when we can begin meeting in person again, but until then, stay safe and keep finding creative ways to make the best better! Don’t hesitate to reach out with questions, suggestions and ideas.

Best,
Sara

Hey, 4-H community! We hope you all find yourselves well. Valentines Day is day to connect with loved ones and friends, and we challenge you all to connect with a family member, friend, animal friend, or even a random person lurking in the streets. You never know the impact your words can have on someone, and bringing a smile upon someone’s face, is an unforgettable feeling. On the same note, we are beyond grateful for your help in The Valley of The Moon stuffed animals drive! Thank you so much for your help and support, and thank you for helping these kid’s lives.

If you are in need of more community service projects, I would highly recommend Farm to Pantry. Farm to Pantry is a non profit organization founded in 2008 that commits itself to rescuing food and produce that would otherwise not be eaten. They strive to provide a constant surplus of healthy and fresh produce to our local communities who lack access to it. I have been volunteering with Farm to Pantry for a few months now, and it is my favorite way to start a Saturday or Sunday morning. You can head over to their website and sign up for their newsletter where you receive local news, updates, and volunteer opportunities. I hope you all had a great month and Valentines Day.

Cheers, Alister
📢 SoCo 4-H Club Shout Out: Sonoma Valley 4-H
As the year is coming to a start, Sonoma Valley 4-H is happy to see new and returning members being welcomed into our 4-H family. Despite not being able to meet in person, we are making things work, and reminding ourselves to “Make the Best Better” in every possible way. Sonoma Valley 4-H has members of all different ages, use their creative thinking and positive mindsets to fill our club with great ideas.

Our Club has a large variety of projects for our members to choose ranging from...Poultry, Archery, Woodworking, Beekeeping, Viticulture and Quilting to name a few. In various fairs and events, members get to show off and present the work that they have learned while being a part of these projects. During our monthly meeting, we discuss ideas for fundraisers and service projects, upcoming events, project information, and play games. We think that it is very important, especially over Zoom, that our members have a chance to bond and feel a part of a community. Our Song and Rec. officers do an amazing job of making sure all members are having a fun time during the meetings.

Our 4-H club often works closely with the Sonoma Valley FFA Chapter on various events and fundraisers. Sonoma Valley 4-H and FFA put on a Covid-19 safe fundraiser in October. It was a drive-through haunted house where our club’s leadership acted out characters of a story. Our 4-H club made a kid-friendly drive-through while the Sonoma Valley FFA made their drive through a little spookier. In the past, we have done fundraisers and events such as the annual Flapjack Feed, a cookie exchange, and many others, but because of Covid restrictions, we are unable to perform those events. Because of that, our leadership is spending a lot of time thinking outside the box on alternative ways to raise money and give our members a positive 4-H year. So far their ideas have succeeded and we are looking forward to more creative ideas for the future.

Sonoma Valley 4-H is looking forward to meeting their members face to face, but in the meantime, still having fun virtually. Our club is very grateful to be a part of Sonoma County 4-H and is excited about the events in the future.
