Iowa State University Extension and Outreach expands impact with language translation efforts

Human Sciences Extension and Outreach's strategic sustainability plan, Journey 2030, aims to expand opportunities to groups that were historically excluded or experience limited access to education.
"Thinking about and serving all Iowans is front and center in our new strategic plan," said Deb Sellers, associate dean in the College of Human Sciences and director of Human Sciences Extension and Outreach. "We have done work in this space for a long time -- and we have made great progress -- but we also are aware that demographics are changing in Iowa and there is more we can do."

McNeill honored by national board for work as a mentor
Dr. Elizabeth McNeill, assistant professor in Food Science and Human Nutrition received the Undergraduate Research Mentor award from the Board on Human Sciences - APLU in November. This is a national award with a single recipient each year and its purpose is to recognize a faculty member in the human sciences for exceptional performance as a research mentor for undergraduate students.

Exploring stories behind names to build inclusive classrooms
A working paper explores the nuanced and complex linguistic, cultural, and pragmatic considerations Chinese Americans take into account when naming children, and provides elementary teachers with book and activity recommendations to help build inclusive classrooms.
“There are a lot of interesting facets to what your name says about you and who you are in a certain place,” said Emily Hayden, associate professor of education.

College leaders will recognize students receiving bachelor’s degrees at the college’s undergraduate convocation at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 17, in C.Y. Stephens Auditorium. Six graduating seniors will receive special honors at the ceremony:
