The Basics of Southwest Alabama
May 2023 Newsletter Principle #1
"MAXIMIZE LOVE, MANAGE STRESS"

NORMAL/POSITIVE STRESS:
  • We all encounter stress: Learning to manage stressful experiences is a normal part of development and parent-child relationships.
CHRONIC/TOXIC STRESS:
  • Parent/Caregiver: When adults feel highly stressed, their ability to be emotionally responsive is reduced. Their ability to support learning and build secure attachment may be diminished.
  • Child: Chronic stress conditions their nervous system to be hyper-vigilant, constantly expecting threats in the environment. This can impede learning and self-regulation.
  • Secure parent/caregiver relationships can help protect children from the effects of toxic stress, even if the family’s environment is chaotic!
Balloon Breaths signals our brain via the Vagus nerve that our body is safe by triggering the relaxation response and lowering the stress
response.
