A CARTA Round Table: Discussion on Pursuing a PhD in Africa:  Bridging the Gender Gap

As part of its campaign to celebrate surpassing the 100 graduate mark, CARTA hosted a second round table discussion on December 2, 2021, titled “Pursuing a PhD in Africa: Bridging the gender.” In the discussion moderated by CARTA Co-director, Sharon Fonn, the panelists delved deeper into gender imbalances that exist in pursuing a PhD in the continent and what should be done to ensure gender-responsive PhD programs across. The conversations dissected women's gender roles, which are likely to influence their journey and completion of their doctoral programs.

“It was a great honor to participate as one of the panelists in the CARTA round table. It was exciting for me to share my experience in a multi-disciplinary global platform provided by CARTA. Quality doctoral training, thorough supervision and mentoring from the gender lense dominated our discussion. I remain a passionate CARTA ambassador for life.” - Ayodele John (Cohort Four Graduate, University of Ibadan)- panelist.
