Happy December!
I hope that the Thanksgiving holiday was enjoyable for all of you. My family and I had the opportunity to travel back to West Virginia where my husband, Mark, was born and raised. We enjoyed connecting with our nieces and the rest of Mark’s family, including his grandmother who is almost 99 years old!
It was a great experience for our boys as they got to experience the differences between the state of West Virginia and California and appreciate all the greatness that both have to offer. We had a great time but we were happy to get back home last week. There’s really no place in the world I’d rather live than right here in Long Beach.
The month of December is going to be a very festive, yet busy month for me and the City Council. As the chair of the Port, Transportation, and Infrastructure Committee, I expect that we will spend a lot of time this month working on better understanding the federal infrastructure bill and what that means for the city of Long Beach. I hope to have at least 2 PTI meetings during the month of December so that we can be in a good place to hit the ground running at the start of the new year.
I know that one of the biggest projects for me in the 3rd district is the repaving of Studebaker Road. Trust me, that is a major priority for me and has been for over 4 years. We are getting there and I hope the federal dollars can be used to fill our funding gap.
Additionally, I am very focused on making sure we acquire the necessary funding to replace the pumps in Alamitos Bay so that we can ensure the water quality remains at an acceptable level for all those who swim in the bay.
I encourage you to reach out to my office if you have your own infrastructure recommendation. We will consider all of the input we receive as we set the priorities for the city for the coming years.
I wanted to take a moment to share with all of you that the boundaries of the 3rd district have changed as a result of the recent redistricting process. Unfortunately, several communities that were part of the 3rd district for many decades are now in different districts. So, to our neighbors in Bluff Park, Bluff Heights, Park Estates, Bixby Hills, Marina Estates, and College Park Estates, we will miss having you as part of the 3rd district. Don’t worry, you are in great hands with your new representatives.
To our neighbors in the Bryant, Zaferia and recreation Park neighborhoods, we welcome you to the 3rd district. Over the course of the next few weeks, I will be doing my best to meet as many neighbors who are new to the district as possible. Please feel free to reach out to me directly to set up a meeting or to make the connection. My team and I look forward to serving you to the best of our ability.
Finally, I want to wish all of you a peaceful and joyous holiday season. It has been quite the year. There have been many ups and downs and uncertainties. Together we have braved the unknowns and developed a sense of community that we would not have otherwise known existed. I am truly grateful for that. I am in awe of the hundreds of residents who reached out to me through the redistricting process and who cared so much about the future of our communities that they made it a point to attend commission meetings and weigh in on the process. Your engagement has restored so much hope in me for a brighter 2022!
Happy holidays.

In response to recent break-ins occurring in neighborhoods throughout Council District 3, Councilwoman Price called a community meeting to address the rising issue. This past month, Councilwoman Price, along with the new East Division Commander Michael Richens, met with residents at Fire Station 14 to hear their concerns on the recent break ins, and discuss solutions to solve the issues in the neighborhood in the future. The meeting was very productive, and we look forward to continuing these conversations with residents to ensure safety in Council District 3!

Elfin Children's Boutique
Every local business has a story worth sharing with the community. And that’s the belief behind these articles – to shine the spotlight on all our favorite local businesses, and to learn a little about the ones we may not know that well.
A newly opened business in the 2nd & PCH shopping center is Elfin children’s boutique. Melissa Marks and Staci Nicole Pearlman are the owners of this adorable business. They specialize in hard-to-find, carefully curated clothing and accessories for kids.
All the brands they carry are women-owned, and most are locally made. They also offer hand embroidery on anything purchased in the store for an additional fee. They opened their first Elfin in Woodland Hills and have now found Long Beach to be a special community that they wanted to be a part of. Here is a little bit of history found on Yelp:
Established in 2020. We've always been passionate about dressing our littles in outfits we'd wear ourselves but noticed a void when it came to a one-stop-shop for fashionable and functional items for mamas and minis.
Between our combined 25+ years in the fashion industry and 5+ (and counting) years as mamas, we came together to create just that - a curated space to shop, get inspired, and connect. We love simple details, whimsical prints, modern silhouettes, organic cotton, feel-good fabrics, muted hues, sustainable designs, and unisex staples. We're committed to curating a collection of items that have been tried, tested, and loved by us (and our little ones). Nothing makes us happier than supporting and encouraging small businesses like our own and making sure everything we sell is high-quality, thoughtfully made, and designed with your mini in mind.
Elfin is definitely a shop for functional and fashionable pieces for mamas and minis.

Finding artists in the 3rd District every month is always interesting because of the vast differences and similarities each artist exhibits. Doug Kurtz is an artist so much so, it’s quite possible you’ve already seen his work around the city. This month’s new featured artist is not so new around the area and is also a local Belmont Shore resident. Doug worked for LBUSD for 20+ years and has introduced art therapy programs for children with autism. As far as public art, if you’ve gone to Poly High School or have a kid that goes there you’ve definitely seen his work at the Poly High School Playhouse.
You might also recognize his work from the East Village Arts District Mural.
Doug’s passion for art has developed into helping students with autism. He’s helped create art therapy programs and coordinate art mural projects for students to be a part of. Doug has seen students with autism make breakthroughs during art therapy by them finding comfort and confidence in themselves and work. Patrick Moreno from CSULB Dept. of Journalism interviewed Doug back in 2012 about his education program with LBUSD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oTXxpN16z4
Currently, Doug is working on finding projects to beautify the Long Beach Coastal Districts and hopes to continue sharing his work throughout the city. To view more of his artwork visit his website at:
