The Season After Pentecost
JUNE 12, 2021
This Week's Worship
Grace worshipers have several options for worship now. You are invited to in-person worship in the Nave at 8am, and we will continue offering in-person worship outdoors in the courtyard at 10am.  We are no longer asking people who attend either in-person service to sign up in advance.

Worship (continued)
For those who must still be cautious about gathering among flesh-and-blood humanity, the 10 a.m. service wxzzzill be live-streamed on Facebook. The clergy and vestry are keeping an eye on local COVID stats and will revise worship options in accordance with what becomes safer or less safe.

The 8am Sunday Eucharist will be held in the Nave (main indoor worship space), and going forward, assuming a continued decline in infection rates. As has been our practice during the pandemic, we will celebrate Holy Eucharist in one kind (bread only), and the priests will wear masks throughout the service, unless they are preaching or officiating. The windows will be open and fans will be blowing. All in attendance at the 8am service, vaccinated or not, are asked to wear masks.

Before entering the Nave, either from the courtyard, or from the front of the church, you’ll find a station hand sanitizer and extra masks.

Outdoor Holy Eucharist Continues in the courtyard at 10am
We will continue to hold outdoor worship at 10am in the courtyard at Grace. We felt it important to continue to worship outdoors to offer an option to families with young children, individuals who are not yet vaccinated, and others who are not yet ready to be worshipping inside.

Some mornings in the courtyard are hot, which is why we are continuing his service at 10am instead of at 10:45, when the heat tends to be worse. We are trying to keep these outdoor services relatively brief. The 10am time is a temporary accommodation, and we expect that we will eventually return to our pre-pandemic schedule.

We ask that those who are not vaccinated wear masks when in close proximity to others at outdoor worship. Priests will continue to wear masks when distributing communion. We also recommend wearing sunscreen and/or a sunhat for this service.  We will always have some chairs available, but we ask that those who can bring their own chairs do so.

On Sundays when it rains, the rain plan is for those who are comfortable worshipping indoors to move into the nave (masks required), and those who wish to remain outdoors to gather under the pavilion for a brief reflection on the scriptures for the day and communion.

Compline and Morning Prayer remain available online. To access these and the online streaming service, see below:

Online Service -- Livestream of 10 a.m. Service

Summer Activities for Children
Sunday School
10 a.m. on Sundays in the pavilion;
Nursery coming soon! Please contact Maria to help or if you need the nursery!  (mariahurt1915@gmail.com)

Arts Camp for Grace Kids (July 24-25); July 23 picnic for all Grace families with kids

Grace Arts Camp (Abridged Edition!): For All Grace-Related Families with Children (0 to 8th Grade)

July 23 we will have a picnic for all families with children. This includes families with children too young for regular art camp activities.

On July 24 and 25, we will have arts camp for Grace kids, grandkids, and Grace visitors. We are not sure how many we can host in this era of COVID and quarantine, and we plan to handle things outdoors as much as possible.

The arts camp curriculum will be shaped around each age group. We will have a 10 to 4 schedule with activities for ages 4 & 5, grades 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 4th (split into at least two groups) and 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th in another group. Curriculum will be geared toward what the age groups will find fun and different, especially the middle schoolers.

Plus, we will have an hour of programming for children ages 0 to almost 4. That schedule will be announced shortly.

We need all volunteers from past years who might be willing to help. There will be some morning set-up on Saturday and Sunday, so even if you can't help with kids, perhaps you can help with that!! Please let me know if you are interested by emailing me at mariahurt1915@gmail.com. Text me at 423-503-4531.

Clergy Outdoor Office Hours
The Rev. April Berends will be in the courtyard on Tuesday, June 15, from 10am-noon. The Rev. David Burman will be away from the office next week; he will resume office hours when he returns. As ever, our priests would be happy to connect with you, either by phone or video call or socially-distanced in person.

As always, our priests would be happy to connect with you, either by phone or video call or socially-distanced in person. Feel free to call, text, or email  April (aberends@saygrace.net) and David (dburman@saygrace.net) to make arrangements.
Food Pantry
In spite of a persistent drizzle and air roughly the thickness of tiramisu, seventeen people made the trek to Grace's food pantry and left with sustenance for 53 (36 adults and 17 children). Pantry days usually end with a many items thinned out but none completely gone; this week, though, we've got some gaping holes. To fill these, we need:

  • beef stew
  • chili
  • baked beans
  • packets of instant oatmeal

Thanks to all who so steadfastly donate goods to help us meet the needs of those who come for help. The months of pandemic isolation could have been a disaster for the pantry, but stalwart parishioners and Belvoir neighbors have persisted even in the face of plague and for that we fall to our knees in awe and offer profound thanks. We are blessed to be part of a community with its eyes on the essential!
Lenten Roses Need New Homes
After long consideration, the chairs of the Gardens & Grounds Committee (Lisa, Kristina, and Tom) have decided to curtail the Lenten roses everywhere except under the Martin Oak across from the Nave. They will remain in that section. The other sections of this slow spreading, Asian ground cover we'll gradually eliminate, beginning THIS JULY. These are tough plants, so this will take some time to eradicate. In order to better support our native insect and bird populations, we plan to replace them with more North American native-based plantings over time.

IF YOU WANT SOME OF THESE FOR YOUR OWN YARD, YOU ARE WELCOME TO COORDINATE WITH LISA AND KRISTINA to dig them up and take them home throughout the month of June. They are easy to transplant. They require shade, especially in the afternoon. They can take extremely dry shade. You will need a shovel and a will, to dig a 360 degree circle around any given clump to dig up its thatch of tough, fibrous roots. Or, you may scoop up the small seedlings around any given clump. This is slower, but also easier.

Please do not dig any up without contacting Lisa Lemza (lemzala@aol.com) or Kristina Shaneyfelt (jkshaneyfelt@epbfi.com.)
