Welcome Back!

We are so excited to have our students back on campus! The students bring so much energy to campus that we really miss during the summer months.

Welcome Week will take place from August 31st- September 3rd. Encourage your student to go to these events to make new friends and get involved. If they are nervous about going, remind them that there are many many students in their same shoes who need friends. They just need to be brave and try to meet new people.

If your student is returning as an upperclassman, remind them why they were excited to come to SUU. Also, encourage them to meet with their advisor to make sure they are on track to graduate and encourage them to get involved on campus in a volunteer or leadership role.

We are here to help parents & families stay connected to campus and to keep them informed. You can follow @SUUParents on Instagram, and our SUU Parent and Family Services page on Facebook. You can also check out our website at suu.edu/parents. We are so excited to work with you to help your student find success at SUU. Please let us know if you have any questions, we are more than happy to help.

What Really Happens After College Drop Off

Worry a Little, Trust a Lot

Joy, FREEDOM, uneasiness, anxiety, and excitement are just a few of the emotions your student will experience during the first few weeks of college. Your student will be busy getting to know their roommates, going to all the campus events, making new friends, and preparing themselves to start classes in just a few short days.

You might be waiting impatiently for a phone call or text. Don't be crushed if it doesn't come right away. Know your student is navigating a new environment and calling you may not be their top priority. Trust that they will reach out when they have a free moment and try not to track them on your phone.

Be prepared for them to make mistakes, after all, they are still learning to be adults but trust that they were listening to you all of these years whether you thought they were or not.

WELCOME WEEK

August 31st-September 3rd

MENTAL HEALTH

Mental health is essential for a student's academic success. SUU provides resources, support, and services to address mental health issues at every level of concern. We are committed to helping all Thunderbirds Thrive. If your student needs assistance navigating any of the resources, please have them contact Counseling and Psychological Services, the Dean of Student's Office, or the Health and Wellness Center.

WHAT IS FERPA

If your student would like you to have access to their account. Please Read!

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level.

To help open up communication between the University and home, a student can fill out a Release of Information form, and place it on file at the Registrar's Office (Student Center, Room 166).

The Release of Information form can be found at: https://www.suu.edu/registrar/pdf/authorizaton-to-release-form.pdf

More information about FERPA can be found at:

DID YOU FORGET THE MEAL PLAN?

Make sure your student is eating good meals throughout the semester!

Meal plans save you time and money:

  • Students will never worry about their next meal… and meal plans get you discounts on the price per meal in the dining hall!

Meal exchanges get your access to more dining on campus!

  • We know the dining hall is just one option on campus… students can exchange their dining hall meal at Chick-fil-A, Papa John’s, and the Thunderbird market up to 5 times per week!

*Please note: First Apartment plans cannot exchange to Chick-fil-A

Dining Dollars get your access to EVERYTHING!

  • Dining Dollars are just like cash but for food. All dining locations accept Dining Dollars, including the dining hall T-Bird Eats.

Want to learn more? Visit our website DineonCampus.com/SUU for information on each plan.
