St. Brendan Weekly Bulletin
October 27, 2021
From the Principal
Dear St. Brendan Families,
All Saints Day is next week on Monday, November 1st. We look forward to honoring the saints at a school Mass on Monday. St. Brendan invites ALL STUDENTS to dress as a saint on All Saints Day. This is encouraged for all students, but optional. Keep in mind, costumes should not be distracting to the learning environment (no masks, costume weapons, etc.). Students will also be having their normal recess, so please make sure students can play in their costumes, or send their uniform to change into. Also, for safety reasons, students may not wear sandals. If students choose not to dress as a saint, they will need to dress in full-uniform as 1st - 8th will attend All Saints Day Mass. Preschool - kindergarten will attend Mass on All Souls Day.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the first Parent Club meeting last week! As I shared at the meeting, the St. Brendan Parish Mission: Surge of the Heart is on November 15th and 16th 7pm-8:30pm in the church. I highly recommend parents attend this wonderful and inspiring event. The talks are titled, “Who is God and Why that Matters” and “God’s Dream for Your Life”. We are blessed to have Mr. Leonetti join our school during the day on November 15th with an age-appropriate presentation for students. I look forward to seeing many of you on the 15th and 16th. Please see the bulletin below for more information.

For those of you who attended the Parent Club meeting, your student will bring home a free dress ticket on Friday which can be redeemed for a free dress day on Wednesday, November 3rd.  We appreciate your attendance and engagement in our school community!

This Thursday, after school at 3:15pm in the church Father Wichert will host an altar server training for students in grades 3-8. We encourage students to consider participating in this important ministry. There are opportunities for students to serve at Friday school Masses, Sunday Masses, or funerals. If you have any questions about altar serving, please contact Ermina Swager at ermina@saintbrendan.org.

Thank you for your support of our Boosterthon Fundraiser! We surpassed our goal with a fundraising total of $37,149. Wahoo!! We will be putting this funds to good use with several facility upgrades including several additional security cameras and classroom blinds to increase student safety and security.
Thank you for your continued support of our students and school!

Blessings,

November is the month of the Holy Souls in Purgatory. Purgatory is where souls go who still need to be purified before they can see God in Heaven. In Purgatory, a soul can no longer pray for itself, so they have to rely on others to pray for them to help ease their suffering and quickly advance them through their purification so that they can join the saints in heaven.

Since we are all sinners, the Church offers us many ways to receive remission of the temporal punishment of sin, also known as an indulgence. In November, we have 4 different opportunities to relieve ourselves of the punishment we should endure for our sins, either entirely for past sins, or even partially for those past sins.

From November 1st-November 8th, anyone who visits a Cemetery and prays for the dead can receive a plenary indulgence for the souls in purgatory. On Saturday, November 6th, we will pray at Holyrood Cemetery for those who have died.  Please join us to pray at the graves and to pray the Rosary for the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

On All Souls Day (November 2nd), anyone who visits a Church and recites an Our Father and Nicene Creed can also earn a plenary indulgence.

There is also a Cathedral indulgence and an indulgence you can earn on the Feast of Christ the King (Sunday, November 21st). There are conditions that need to be met for an indulgence to qualify as full remission of sins, and UCatholic has a concise but well written explanatory article HERE.

Some of the ways to pray for the souls in purgatory is to recite the following prayer as you pass a cemetery: Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let the perpetual light shine upon them. And may the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

St. Gertrude the Great was told that by piously reciting the following prayer, 1,000 souls would be released from Purgatory:
“Eternal Father, I offer You the most precious blood of thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, for those in my own home and in my family. Amen.”

Here is another: Prayer for the souls in Purgatory
O gentle Heart of Jesus, ever present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls in Purgatory, have mercy on them. Be not severe in Your judgments, but let some drops of Your Precious Blood fall upon the devouring flames. And, Merciful Saviour, send Your angels to conduct them to a place of refreshment, light and peace. Amen.

Calling all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students!
Do you want to gain confidence in your public speaking while having a great time with your classmates? Do you want to earn scholarship money for high school?
Speech club tournaments are right around the corner. With a variety of speech categories available, there is a category for everyone.
Practices will be after school on Fridays from 3:15-4:30. Come one, come all!

Cost is $15 per student to join. Please send payment to school office Attn: Speech Club or bring to first practice. Checks can be paid out to "St. Brendan School". There will also be an entry fee per category at each tournament. These fees vary by school but are generally $5-$8 per student category and will be collected later when we register for the tournaments. The Speech Club registration form is attached.

Volunteers needed! Parent volunteers are essential to making Speech Club a success! Volunteers may be needed for practices - stay tuned for more details. This year's tournaments are virtual, so students will be competing via recorded video submissions. Parents help with taping students' presentations and tournament judging will be needed.

Blessing Bag Donations - Student Store
As part of our charitable giving, Student Store wants to send every St. Brendan student home with a Blessing Bag to give out over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Blessing Bags are gallon-size Ziploc® bags that contain snacks, travel-size toiletries, socks, a bottle of water, grooming supplies, and other items that people who live on the street find useful. Bags are kept in your car, so when you encounter a person who is experiencing homelessness, you can offer the bag to them.

Please help us by donating items listed below . If you would prefer to donate cash, Student Store will go out and buy the supplies to build the bags as well. We would love bulk items, so if you have access through your work or friends, we would really appreciate those times.

To donate any of the items listed below, please place them in the box outside the office marked Blessing Bags by November 15th. If you would like to donate money, please send your cash or check to Theresa Loughlin C/O Student Store to the office.

Thank you for your help to bring help to those in need this holiday season.
Sincerely,
St. Brendan Student Store

This is encouraged for all students, but optional. Keep in mind, costumes should not be distracting to the learning environment (no masks, costume weapons, etc.). Students will also be having their normal recess, so please make sure students can play in their costumes, or send their uniform to change into. Veteran's Day Assembly
We will be holding our annual Veteran's Day Assembly in November.  We invite families to submit photos of family members and loved ones who have served in the military. Please send photos along with the person's name, branch of service, title/rank, and relation to our school. You can e-mail photos and information to christenl@school.saintbrendan.org.

Note: if you already sent in a picture last year, then you DO NOT need to send a picture in this year. We will reuse the photo from last year.
Annual Diaper Bag Drive
St. Brendan School is proud to once again participate in the annual Diaper Bag Project in partnership with the Baby Corner of St. Joseph Church, Seattle. This wonderful organization has furnished thousands of bags for new moms and, as a school, we have supported this effort for many years. They depend on our donations to make up the majority of their diaper bags. Students may bring their unwrapped items to school before November 30th.

This is a list of our greatest needs:

  • disposable newborn or size #1 diapers
  • disposable baby wipe
  • diaper rash ointment
  • 0 - 3 month: pajamas, onesies, socks/bootees, pacifiers
  • receiving blankets
  • plastic baby bottles

Volunteer Opportunity During School Mass
Dear Parents/Guardians: Do you attend Friday's School Mass and feel a tug, a calling to serve during the holiest of feasts? If so, please consider being an Extraordinary Minister of the Holy Eucharist. Our school community would welcome your gift of time and talent, and students LOVE seeing their parents/guardian assist Fr. Wichert in distributing the Sacred Host. If your child is an altar server, it's a great opportunity to volunteer side by side with them. Training will be provided by appointment and service time will count towards school volunteer hours. Volunteers may serve during any daily and/or weekend Masses. Kindly discern and reach out if you're interested. Contact: Ermina Swager (ermina@saintbrendan.org
