OPEN DOOR POLICY has been greeted with rave reviews:
“Incredible record. Dynamic. Unexpected.”
- NPR
“Open Door Policy is their most mature record and one of their darkest, but it also evinces the genuine joy that’s enabled them to endure.”
"Open Door Policy is an addicting and nuanced listen that finds the band tapping into a core essence of their identity while also subtly evolving throughout."
- Stereogum
"Open Door Policy shows a band growing into new life experiences, with a ready eye on mental health and adult drama."
- SPIN
"Another exhilarating blast of crimes, capers, and melancholic mayhem. That the LP comes some 17 years into the indie institution’s recording career is both a surprise and a delight.
- No Depression
“On their eighth studio album, the Hold Steady expand their horizons...Open Door Policy gives the Hold Steady new heft and variety without undercutting the sharpness of the hooks or singer-guitarist Craig Finn’s heart-wrenching novelistic lyricism.”
- Vulture
“The band’s empathy and affection for the dirtbags yearning for transcendence remains as strong as ever...Much like the Christian imagery that pervades the work, the possibility of resurrection and salvation is always there in Hold Steady’s music.
- AV Club
“The best live band in rock is no longer live, but still holding steady...Open Door Policy features some vintage Hold Steady—tight short stories, desperate characters in search of grace, and giant riffs—but there’s a quieter side to it.”
- Esquire
