Enhance Your Emotional Intelligence
Research shows that our emotions have a major influence on how our brain functions. When emotions are high, it can cause a decrease in cognitive abilities, decision-making, and interpersonal skills. It is important to understand and manage our emotions, especially in high-pressure workplaces such as hospitals or research labs. The practice of recognizing and managing our emotions and how they affect others is known as emotional intelligence (EI). Daniel Goleman, a science journalist who popularized this term in 1996, divided EI into five parts: self-awareness, self-regulation, internal motivation, empathy, and social skills. Some ways you can enhance your own EI are:
  • Reflect on your own emotions.
  • Be observant of your emotions.
  • Think before you speak.
  • Explore the "why."
  • Take constructive criticism and learn from it.

Learn more about EI and how you can improve your skills.
