And just like that we have made our way into Fall! With the cooler weather approaching, it's time to pull out the pumpkins and get ready for football, pumpkin spiced everything, and quality time spent with the family!

Best News again....We are so proud to announce that we were awarded the 2021 Best of North Atlanta award for Best Interior Design Firm. We couldn't have done it without everyone's support! Thank you!

As you all know the delays within the industry have been quite the hurdle the last several months. We continue to get hit with delays in manufacturing, delays in textiles, delays in trucking! We are working through these issues daily with the patience of our wonderful clients. We are, slowly but surely, getting rooms to the finished stages of their design process. With that being said, we can't wait to share some new projects that are inching to the finish line.
Speaking of reaching the final stages of design, something we take pride in is creating spaces that engage all five of the senses. It seems obvious that interior design is mainly tactile and visual, but when it comes to touch we go out of our way to find interesting patterns and textures that are stimulating while also adding dimension and variety in your space. Whether you are team neutral or team color, we will go out of our way to make whichever side you land on look stunning. If you are more tonal, intricate accent pillows and throws will help bring in that wow factor. Or if you lean the complete opposite direction and want to play with that pop of color, we have a soft spot for colors like citron, especially on a statement piece like a sectional or an accent chair. When you think of interior design, you are probably asking yourself how do you include the sensation of hearing in a space. Think of it as taking away some of that bass and echo you find when you purchase a new home or starting the design process on a new room. With soft goods like area rugs and drapes, while they are beautiful, they are also creating a cushion for the sounds made in your home to bounce off of and create a softer less harsh environment. You lose the echo and overall improve the acoustics of your space, allowing for family voices or music playing to be the focus.
When crafting a space, most prioritize the visual aspect, but when tasked of reading the room as a whole, we review functional design to be the priority. We review lighting and add dimmers to control the ambiance, we assess the orientation of a piece of art or lighting to ensure the best views are obtained from different positions in the room. It's in those details we create moments that add dimension and create excitement and functionality within the space.

Don't forget the sense of smell! Kat Nelson Design signature scents have officially arrived. You can choose from the traditional candle or a beautiful diffuser. Speakeasy is a dark and musky romantic scent perfect for the bedroom or any sitting area while Wild Grove, a light and bright citrusy scent is the final touch in your kitchen or bathroom. Stay well and Live Beautifully!

Spice and Roast the Chicken:Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Spread chicken out in a roasting pan. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon olive oil and season with 2 teaspoons chili powder, 1 tablespoon cumin, 1/2 teaspoon salt and a pinch or two of cayenne. Roast for 30 minutes. Shred or cut into bite sized pieces. Set aside.

Cook the Chili:In a large pot heat remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil. Sauté onion and garlic over medium heat for 5 minutes or so, until tender. Add beans, shredded chicken, chilies, oregano, 2 tablespoons chile powder, 2 tablespoons cumin, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon cayenne (or more, to taste). Add 4 cups of chicken broth, reserving the rest for thinning the chili to your desired consistency. Stir to combine and simmer gently on low for 20 minutes. (to keep the chicken tender, do not let the pot boil)

Remove the pot from the heat and let it cool for 5 minutes or so before proceeding. With the pot still off the heat, stir 3 cups of cheese into the pot, 1 cup at a time. Then stir in 1 cup of sour cream. (Or for Dean’s richer, creamier version, add all 6 cups of cheese to the pot and 2 cups of sour cream) Bring the pot back to a gentle simmer over low heat (to keep the dairy products from separating, don’t boil). Simmer the chili for 15-20 minutes, adjusting with additional chicken broth, if you like. A method I like to use for great added texture is to use a potato-masherin the pot to mash half the chicken and beans. Then stir to combine with the rest.

Serve chili in bowls with garnishes on top or on the side.

Color and Pattern Play!
One of the interior design trends that is hard to ignore is the overwhelming use of color. Pre- Covid, everything was white with strict clean lines. As beautiful as that look can be, one of the trends that we are seeing is the use of bright pops of color and pattern. A part of us thinks that's because we have been conditioned to spend so much time in these beige rooms that lack our sense of us, so it's time to jump out of the box and introduce colors that excite us and make the space feel like ours. Introducing new colors in a space can feel intimidating because it is a large commitment. But it can also turn that more drab space into one that is the full embodiment of who you are as a person which makes it that more special. One of the best pieces of advice we can give when it comes to stepping out of your cozy and warm comfort zone is that you have to commit to it and believe in it. A good way to ease your way into using color and interesting patterns is accent pillows, throws, and art. These small things will be the puzzle pieces that create the "moment" we all love to see. Slowly, but surely you will find yourself being drawn to a certain color palette, and from there you can play with accent walls that turn into rooms and just really add that WOW factor to the space!

THE LAKE LANIER PROJECT
This project was started pre-pandemic and was what one would consider a major remodel with exterior and interior work completed to create a cohesive vision for this lake front property. With beautiful views of Lake Lanier and transforming the in-law suite, this project allowed Kat to create a space for a family to make beautiful memories for years to come!
The family room was complimented with 2 oversized sectionals that mirrored one another with an end table that's bound to strike up a conversation to complete the space. It can be nerve racking to take what we know as the traditional dining chair and make it a fun piece, but with the simple inclusion of pattern that drab ole dining chair into a piece that wow's your brunch guest and makes the best host for game night. We think all of KND's clients can attest to the fact that she knows exactly what to do when it comes to wall coverings. In the Dining room she opted for a clean and simple grass cloth with minimal pattern as to not take away, but enhance the tonal dining room. It added that subtle pop that really takes the space to the next level. The fun breakfast chairs are wrapped in a Sunbrella fabric to enhance the easy, highly functional living this family required.
Along with the stunning interiors, the outdoor living spaces received a great deal of attention. Especially after dealing with strict quarantine periods, it was important to make the outdoor living spaces as comfortable and functional as possible. We designed outdoor spaces for the screened porch, patio lounge area, firepit area and outdoor dining space. The views that line the property are quite breathtaking and it would seem wrong to not sit back and enjoy them, so a screened in porch along with a beautiful fire pit make the perfect backdrop for those cooler fall nights with the family. Watch our website and social media sites for more pictures of this project.
