A MESSAGE FROM The Rev. Tina Rathbone |

The novelist, poet and Presbyterian minister Frederick Buechner died last week at the age of 96. He was one of those rare people who managed to embody both the life of a deeply faithful, religious person and the life of a perennial questioner. He was a prolific writer as well, and one I’ve turned to many times. Here’s one of his definitions of faith that I have long found particularly helpful:
“Faith is homesickness. Faith is a lump in the throat. Faith is less a position on than a movement toward.”
As we prepare to say goodbye to our Gideon’s Garden interns – and I get ready to head off for two weeks of vacation - the last phrase, ‘movement toward’ is the one I am pinning my hopes on. It has become my prayer this week, in fact: May each one of our 7 interns – Kaitlyn, Jacob, Ash, Caleb, Avanti, TJ and James – move toward love and hope and belonging and joy in the knowledge of their own immeasurable worth – and may all the people of Grace move toward you, brother Jesus, this day and always…

This last week marks the second to last week of our Gideon's Garden internship. It is bittersweet to have seen our interns change and grow over the summer alongside the Garden. Each kid has put into the Garden as much as they have taken out of it. As much as they have grown, they have sown back into the Garden, and as much as they have harvested, they have planted in the ground and also our hearts. And now they get to leave their mark. Pictured above are all of the signs that each of our interns made for the field, specially painted and designed for their plant families that they got to see grow and bear fruit throughout the season. This week, as we close the program, they will get to add their handprint to the dozens of other kids who have been at Gideon's Garden as a testimony to their hard work and growth. Though I am sad to no longer get to see each of them every week, I am looking forward to the coming months and years of witnessing their journey beyond the Garden. |

It costs about $1,500 to support a baby over the time needed for the child to grow old enough to return to their home. Many years ago we at Grace decided to support babies at the Mampong Babies Home in Ghana at the rate of $1,500 per year. Your donations help us reach that goal each year. Elections Will be Held at Convention on November 5th

Would you like to think about joining diocesan leadership by running for a diocesan committee position? This November, Diocesan Convention will be electing new members for almost all diocesan committees. Please read about the committees, what they do, their current memberships, and whether the incumbents are eligible to run again in the Nomination Booklet. If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else, the Nomination Form is available here. Deadline for nominations is August 31, 2022.
The following positions are open for election at the 121st Convention of the Diocese of Western Massachusetts:
The Standing Committee: One clerical and one lay member.
The Diocesan Council: One clerical member from the Worcester Corridor, one clerical member from the Berkshire Corridor and one lay member from the Pioneer Valley Corridor.
The Chapter of Christ Church Cathedral: One lay representative for the Pioneer Valley Corridor.
Disciplinary Board: Two clerical members and one lay member.
Provincial Synod: One lay members and one lay alternate.
General Convention 2024: Eight clerical deputies and alternates and eight lay deputies and alternates. GC81 will be held two years from now in Louisville, KY.

What is God’s will for my life? How do I live my best life? What might this look like? Is what I want truly want what God wants for me? Is what I want best for myself and others? Perhaps there is something I’m missing? Perhaps there is something I’m blind to and can’t see? … these are the kinds of questions that we sit with and wrestle with together in our community of discernment called Loving the Questions.
We believe that you are unique, that you are gifted, and that your story matters. Our community of discernment aims to provide a safe and nurturing environment that honors the Spirit’s unique call to each person — that honors your unique gifts and your unique story.
We meet twice a month via Zoom beginning in September and ending in March. Our primary focus is rooted in prayerful listening to God using a format of group spiritual direction taught by Shalem Institute. Our aim in our gatherings is to listen more deeply and intently to God's gentle and loving desire for each one of us. Or to put it another way, “to stand at the crossroads and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way lies, so that we may walk in it and find rest for our souls.”

Luke 14:1, 7-14
On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely.
When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, `Give this person your place,' and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, `Friend, move up higher'; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."
He said also to the one who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

Highlights from the July 24 Vestry Meeting:
We continued to hear the very sacred spiritual biographies from members of the vestry. As Pennie Curry noted at church on Sunday, July 24 a review of the items in the storage facility has begun with the goal of having the storage facility empty by the end of 2023. The Safe Church committee of Dindy Anderson, Dutch Pinkston, and Andrea White reported on their review of the documents supplied by our diocese and their meeting with our Safe Church officer, Sarah Sieber. Having learned some important points, we have adjusted some ways in which we are working with youth. A follow up meeting is planned for September. Training for Lay Eucharistic Ministers is being scheduled. The Vestry will take August off and resume monthly meetings in September.
