Thursday, July 13, 2023 - Help, Thanks, Wow

Dear Friends in Christ,

Last Sunday, I referenced a book by Anne Lamott and spoke about how prayer can be summed up as "Help, Thanks, and Wow." As a Handing Down the Faith Sunday, after the children's sermon we had kids and adults write out their prayers on small color-coded post-it notes and then come up and place them on a white board.

Personally, I found this exercise quite moving. Watching people carefully offer their visual prayer to the board; stepping back after the service to see the whole, zooming into read some of the particular petitions such as

  • Help with "Managing my overwhelming workload," and "gun violence," and "My loss of faith."
  • Thanks for "grandma's love," and "renewed hope," and "2 years of sobriety."
  • Wow for the "beauty of Lake Michigan," "clean, cool air," and "the wonder of human connection."

If you have never written prayers, I encourage you to try it, either in a journal, or on small scraps of paper placed into a "Prayer box." I find that the longer I spend in a tradition like the Epicopal Church, with so many prayers which appear in print, the more drawn I am to not only hear/speak a prayer but also to see it on the page.

This Sunday we have one of the great parables from Matthew: The Parable of the Sower.

May you know God's peace and Blessing

wherever you will be,

Seth+

Week 7: Summer Creation Care: What is Climate Justice?

12 weeks of Questions to Ponder and Act Upon

Climate justice recognizes that marginalized communities experience the damaging impacts of climate change first and the worst. The climate justice movement is committed to addressing all of the root causes of the climate crisis. It is not just an environmental issue. It is a social, economic, and public health issue too. God implores us to be faithful: faithful stewards, faithful in following Christ, and faithful in loving our neighbors as ourselves.

Questions to ponder and act upon:

1 How is “creation and climate care” an issue of justice?

2  How does it the climate crisis affect different communities?

3  Where do we see climate and environmental injustices play out in our own community, at a neighborhood, city, and regional level?
