The Twelfth Sunday After Pentecost

View printed version of this newsletter

This Sunday!

It’s not too late to register for our young adult–family ministries summer send-off! Come on down Sunday for a time of encouragement and community while we’re all getting into our fall routines.

We will begin the afternoon with live music and an outdoor happy hour time for adults while the youth and children have age-appropriate programming and mingling of their own.

Later we will split into young adult and parent groups for a brief but intentional time of encouragement and to hear about ways to get plugged in this fall. Afterward, we will come back together and enjoy a pasta bar so we can carb load for the race that is set before us!

Please register ASAP at the link below. Walk-ins are welcome, but registration is appreciated!

Registration information:

Adults: $20 (pay-what-you-can option available)

Youth and kids are free!

Choir Camp for 2nd-12th Grades This Saturday

The first session of choir camp with Zippy Hood, Director of Children’s Choirs, was so much fun! Campers played games and enjoyed some musical activities while getting to know each other (and Ms. Zippy!). We’ve got one more choir camp session, and all children entering 2nd–12th grade are invited!

This is a great way for those thinking of signing up for choir to get a sneak peek of our program and a great refresher for those returning.

St. Philip’s Choir Residency: A Note from Pat Gould

August 17, 2022: Mere words fall short when describing the grandeur of Sir Christopher Wren’s magnificent St. Paul’s Cathedral, which opened in 1710. This week, as our choir expertly sings Evensong each day, I feel as though God is giving us a foretaste of our heavenly home. An aura of God’s love for us surrounds us! Jeff Harbin, Director of Music at St. Helena’s in Beaufort, put it perfectly: “There was a moment when I looked up into the eyes of Jesus and, with the beautiful music surrounding me, felt like I was standing before Heaven’s throne. A foretaste of glory divine!”

We will continue our biweekly schedule through the fall, so if you can't make it August 30, be sure to stop by September 13!

Haiti Update: Progress Despite Turmoil

by Suzanne McCord, World Missions Committee

On August 14, the people of Haiti remembered the one-year anniversary of the 7.2 earthquake that rocked the southern half of the country. This devastating earthquake was followed by a tropical storm that hit the same southern area of the country and washed away some of the few buildings that remained after the earthquake. The unelected prime minister of Haiti gave a speech to remember this anniversary because Haiti still has no president to give a speech. Their president was killed July 7, 2021, just one month before the earthquake. And still today no one has been found responsible for the assassination. With no official government, gang violence has grown stronger as rival gangs vie for control of Haiti. Many innocent Haitians are suffering and dying as a result.

The list could go on. You may think to yourself that nothing good is happening in Haiti. But you would be wrong!

St. Philippians Sam and Carol Robinson, Gerry and Suzanne McCord, and Miles Barkley all attended the annual partnership meeting of La Gonâve Haiti Partners in Atlanta July 28–July 30. We all came away amazed at the progress made over the last year in spite of all of these challenges.

St. Philip's Part-Time Staffers Growing Up

Cecilia the sexton-in-training was not on duty yesterday, but she stopped in for an after-school visit and ran into a coworker she hadn't seen in a few months: Gus the office helper!

Gus, who had come by to investigate the cause of an offline printer and to show off some of the skills he picked up at summer camp (and some he'd honed at home––like catching his tail), was happy to see his friend––they've know each other since his age was measured in weeks and hers in months! (They've moved up to months and years respectively.)

If you follow St. Philip's on Facebook or Instagram, then you already knew about yesterday's reunion. If you don't follow St. Philip's...why not? Take a minute now to get connected so that you will always be among the first to hear about upcoming events, schedule changes, and occasional church office shenanigans.
