Plants continue to use water throughout the winter. Soils are often on the dry side during the winter due to freezing and thawing cycles as well as the drying effects of wind. Plants that are well hydrated are better equipped to survive tough winter conditions and will be stronger and better established come spring.

While winter is not over yet (Probably. Right? Who knows?!?), our ground temperatures are beginning to warm up! When ground temperatures reach 50-55 F, summer weeds start to germinate. (Seed germination for sandbur, for example, begins when soil temperatures reach 52-75 F.)
It is recommended to apply pre-emergence herbicides several weeks before germination. In other words, the time to apply pre-emergence herbicides looks to be on us sooner than normal in 2020. Visit
