Transition Date for Secondary Students
The School Board for St. Louis Park Public Schools unanimously approved changes to the District’s Safe Learning Plan at their meeting on Monday, January 25. St. Louis Park Middle School and High School will transition back to hybrid learning in a rolling start approach (see timeline below) or continued distance learning.

Secondary students and families have voiced their desire to return to school through multiple communication channels, including superintendent listening sessions, student meetings, student surveys and direct communication with School Board members.
Transitioning to hybrid for secondary students is contingent on the Hennepin County COVID-19 case rate data meeting the safe learning model parameters and expectations of 29 or less cases per 10,000 and the school district’s ability to successfully meet all of our local educational delivery model considerations.
Approved plan changes and the Secondary Transition Timeline include:
  • January 26-February 4: Middle School and High School students and families can select to change learning models to continue distance learning or return to school in the hybrid learning model. Details will be forthcoming.
  • February 18-19: No School for students in grades 6-12 to allow for transition days for teachers and staff to prepare for the transition to hybrid instruction at fifty-percent capacity.
  • February 22: All Middle School students in grades 6-8 and High School students in grade 9 and grade 12 will return to school for hybrid learning at fifty-percent capacity.
  • March 8: High School students in grade 10 and grade 11 will return to school for hybrid learning at fifty-percent capacity.
Immunization Reminder
Immunization Reminder

St. Louis Park Public Schools requires compliance with the Minnesota State Immunization Law (M.S. 121A.15). In anticipation of middle school students returning to in-person learning, your student must be up-to-date on immunizations, or provide the appropriate legal exemption form. Your student will not be able to attend school in-person until the appropriate documentation is provided.

If you have questions please contact the health office at 952-928-6311.

6th Grader Silas Gidden
Six grader Silas Gidden was published in the Sun Sailor this week after submitting his letter to the editor regarding helping the homeless. Silas completed the assignment during his writing class' Advocacy Project, where students chose a cause they were passionate about and then used their writing to advocate for action. Silas took the initiative to submit the letter to the local paper on his own. His fellow classmates in Ms. Zumberge's 3rd hour writing class were just as impressed and excited for him as his teacher!

Being Organized & Fighting Procrastination
BACK AGAIN!!!
Being Organized & Fighting Procrastination
Sessions RE-starting NEXT Week!

The first round was a success so our building substitute, Ms. Gutz, is hosting another round of sessions on Being Organized & Fighting Procrastination. There will be five topics total and each topic will be offered twice, once in the morning and once in the afternoon on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Every session is open to all students to join as they are able. These are optional, but highly recommended as we all continue to navigate school during a pandemic.

“It helped me organize my work and that has helped me do things with more efficiency.” (A.C.)

“Before I came to the classes I just thought that they would be boring and a waste of time because I thought I knew everything. I then realized that some of it was review but in other parts I learned new things too. I have been motivated to start writing in my planner again and it helps keep me organized. In the planning work...now I remember if I have a big project to break it up in smaller parts. The taking notes and emails class was the most useful to me.” (C.P.)

The link and Zoom meeting information for all sessions is the same and is as follows:

All sessions are offered twice on Tuesdays and Fridays:
9:20-9:50 a.m. (after 1st hour check-in) and
1:45-2:15 p.m. (after 5th hour check-in)

Tuesday, February 2     The Basics: how organization and procrastination are related;
establishing routines; avoiding distractions
Friday, February 5         Using Your Planner
Tuesday, February 9      Your Work Space
Friday, February 12        Planning Your Work: where do you start?
Tuesday, February 16    Taking Notes and Managing Emails
Community Project Information for 8th Graders
Updated January 29
Attention 8th grade families - Community Project Update

Students were asked to submit their group member names and topic choice this week during advisory class. Some are still refining their ideas and selecting which community that they serve.

The Community Project is about students taking action and using their voice. Students can do action in a variety of ways:
1. research
2. advocacy
3. indirect action
4. action

Here's a link to the general calendar of events related to this project. Students will be assigned a supervisor by February 10. We are planning a big launch to groups working and virtually meeting with their supervisors then. The supervisor's role is to coach them as they independently work to bring their action to life. Students will be hearing from their supervisors through email early in February.

Students should have completed lessons/modules #2,3,4, and 7 already. They access these lessons/modules through their advisory teacher. Check-in with them to see how it's going, who their group is or if they chose to work alone, etc.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Check out books from the LMC
Check out books from the St. Louis Park Middle School library media center! Students can check out books and pick them up "curbside" (in the front entrance foyer). Book requests and holds can be made via our Destiny Catalog online. Instructions for how to request and hold books can be found here. We have many new books and thousands upon thousands of great middle school books both in English and Spanish. Students can check out books for pleasure reading and/or for school assignments using our new system.
Also, any overdue books need to be returned before new books can be picked up (or these books can be renewed for another two weeks by requesting this by email). Thank you!
Please contact Greg Holmbeck, library media specialist, or Diane Vig with questions at [email protected] and [email protected], respectively.
Happy Reading!!
