Development Director Dorothy Jorgensen delivering an "Ashes to Go" packet to PTO officer and HNS parent Marissa Rocheleau
"ASHES TO GO"
Given the COVID pandemic, churches everywhere have had to change worship practices. This work of adapting continues as we enter the reflective season of Lent. Clergy are unable to place ashes directly on people's foreheads this year, but there are many other ways for people to observe this solemn day. At Holy Nativity, in addition to offering an evening service in the church, Altar Guild Director Sandra Braham and Rev. Libby assembled "Ashes to Go" packets for all Holy Nativity families. These packets, which were distributed at pick-up from school and at the evening service at the church, included ashes (that could be imposed at home) and a brief instruction card that read: "The reminder that we are dust turns our attention to the creative power of God and God's ability to heal the brokenness in our lives." May everyone experience the blessings of a Holy Lent this year.

Thrift Store Volunteers Nobuko Loncar, Ginnie Long, and Cheri Keefer announce the gift to HNC (keep safe social distancing practices, of course!)
THRIFT STORE OFFERS FESTIVAL PROCEEDS GRANT TO HNC
As noted last week in the Banyan Tree, the Holy Nativity Thrift Store's Fall Festival was extremely successful, despite COVID. As is the tradition, the volunteers give away 100% of the proceeds to local organizations. For the first time, the volunteers selected Holy Nativity Church as one of three recipient groups. "The volunteers at the Thrift Store recognized that 2020 was a really difficult year, and we wanted to recognize that fact and help the church out," said Thrift Store Manager Peggy Budlong. So on February 7, three Thrift Store volunteers were in church to announce the gift of $3800 to the congregation and to receive leis along with our very hearty thanks. We are so grateful for our partnership and the good work we are able to do together! (Two other $3800 gifts were given to the "Institute for Human Services" and "Lima Kokua" this year.)
BECOMING THE BELOVED COMMUNITY:
A STUDY FOR LENT
This year, during Lent, we at Holy Nativity will offer a five-session series entitled, "Becoming the Beloved Community" on Wednesday evenings from 6-7pm. It will begin on next Wed, Feb 24. As our nation experiences its current racial and political challenges, it is important for us to engage in work that will equip us to build relationships and mend the broken places in our communities. This series seeks to help us do that through the practices of individual reflection and small-group conversation.
The introduction to the series, which comes to us from the Diocese of Los Angeles, describes it theme: The core value of the quest for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's "Beloved Community" was "agape" love...which he said "seek(s) to preserve and create community." In this series, we will ask ourselves how we are engaging in agape here and now "in meaningful and steadfast ways to help a challenged world."
Facilitators Bob Steele+, Alison Dingley+ and I hope that many from our Holy Nativity community will join us on Zoom for this series. We especially welcome friends and colleagues from Holy Nativity School. (The link to the series will be on our website: holynatiivtyhawaii.org).
