We continue our 150th year of celebration by sharing a story of one of our longtime members.
ELLIE LIBAL
Ellie Libal grew up on in a small farm community in North Central Kansas. Ellie attended Ft. Hayes University where she was part of the first class in nursing at that school. She received her nursing degree but continued schooling which allowed her to become a teacher in the school of nursing. While in college at Ft Hayes, Ellie had a blind date with Don Libal. Don was a Kansas farm boy.

An unusual plan was made for their wedding. Working with an aunt & uncle in Longmont, they planned a wedding at the Methodist church. Ellie, Don, Ellie’s mom & sister made the trip to Longmont while Dad remained at the farm. Ellie & Don were married in the Terry Street Church on December 10, 1955. Rev. Don Grooters officiated. They returned to their life in Kansas but their love for Colorado remained with them.

Ellie & Don moved to Longmont in March, 1958. They first lived in an apartment located on the corner of Mountain View and Main Street. They purchased a home at 1330 Gay Street in November of 1958. They have made two additions to their home. Ellie continues to live there.

The Libals attended the Methodist Church on Terry Street but didn’t actually join the church until 1960 after the church had relocated on 11th Ave.

Ellie worked as a nurse at Longmont United Hospital until her children were born and then she became a stay-at-home mom. In 1984 she returned to work part time at Longmont Clinic. Don managed the Sinclair Station at 9th & Main, across from Longmont High School. The high school kids were regular customers. Later he worked at a station at 17th & Main which is now the site of 7-11.

Both Don and Ellie became involved in the life of the church. Don served as an usher for many years. Ellie is active in a UMW Circle and has enjoyed attending summer Bible studies. For many years they were responsible for keeping the brass offering plates & communion service shining, plus keeping the pews in order. Ellie says church has always been and continues to be a very important part of her life.

Don & Ellie’s children attended Sunday School and Bible School. The two older children were a part of the Children’s Choir under the direction of Carolyn Nixon. They were also members of Methodist Youth Fellowship. Rev. Grooters & Rev. Rice baptized the children. Two of the children were married in the church and 2 grandchildren were baptized in the church.

After 62 years of marriage to that Kansas farm boy who charmed her on a blind date, Ellie sadly said good-by to Don on Oct. 28, 2017.

Thanks you Ellie for sharing a story of love and service.

Did you know your charitable contributions could be tax deductions?
Charitable giving during the holiday season this year takes on a new, happier meaning when it comes to tax deductions.

Typically, most people aren't able to get a tax break when they donate money to a charity if they're claiming the standard deduction on their federal income tax returns. And nearly 9 out of 10 taxpayers are taking that standard deduction these days.

Yet pandemic relief in Congress created a special but temporary break for giving money to a qualified charity that applies to people who do not itemize.

A married couple taking the standard deduction is allowed to claim up to $600 for cash contributions made to qualifying charities in 2021, if filing a joint return. It's a temporary break, which is set to expire on Jan. 1.

A single individual, including married individuals filing separate returns, can claim a deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions.
If you are wondering who are qualifying charities…just ask them; and ‘yes’, the Heart of Longmont UMC is a qualifying charity.

What a great way to make the holidays a bit more special for others.
Support LGBTQIA+ Organizations
This Holiday Season
While the holiday season is a wonderful one for many, to others it's one of the most difficult times of the year. 2021 has been a particularly hard year for LGBTQIA+ people, being one of the deadliest and dangerous years for trans* people, and seeing many intersections of injustice against marginalized identities overall.

If you have some extra room in your holiday giving budget this season and would like to donate to organizations that support and empower LGBTQIA+ individuals and the LGBTQIA+ community, here are a few suggestions:

PFLAG was founded in 1972 and the Boulder County chapter was established in 1993. Their mission is to provide support, education, and advocacy for the families, friends, and allies of lesbians, gays, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex people, as well as for the LGBTQIA+ community itself.

Originally established in 1998 as Boulder Pride, Out Boulder County changed its name in 2016 to reflect the organization's broadening outreach and support. Working independently and in collaboration, they facilitate connection, advocacy, education, research and programs to ensure LGBTQIA+ people and communities thrive in Boulder County and beyond.

Run by and for trans people, Trans Lifeline is a hotline and microgrants organization that offers direct emotional and financial support to trans* people in crisis and connects trans* people to community support and resources needed to survive and thrive. Originally established in 2014, Trans Lifeline has answered over 100,000 calls and disbursed $1 million to trans* individuals in need.

The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQIA+ young people. They offer crisis services and peer support to LGBTQIA+ youth and have research, education, and advocacy programs.

Launched in 2016, the Trans Empowerment Project has provided direct aid for over 1200 trans* people across the US, including folx who are queer, trans, non-binary, two-spirit, gender non-conforming, and of other identities. Their main focus is on the liberation and success of disabled trans* people of color.

Have you ever wanted to ask Jesus one question? What would it be?

We will begin the new year of 2022 with a new sermon series: “Searching for Answers”. What are the questions you have about the Bible? About living the Christian Life? About the Teachings of Jesus? Pastor David would love to know what questions you may have and will invite all of us to think about such topics. He can’t promise that he will answer them the way Jesus would, but it will be fun and hopefully inspiring to discuss them together.

Send you questions to Pastor David at searching-for-answers@heartoflongmont.org

The new sermon series begins Sunday January 2, 2022.
There is a collection box in the entryway here at the Heart of Longmont to collect items.
MASKS REQUIRED
FOR IN-PERSON WORSHIP
The recent emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus Delta variant in parts of Colorado has highlighted that there may be times when changing patterns of COVID-19 transmission or severity warrant enhanced infection control measures to ensure congregational safety. I think we have entered such a time. While Boulder County continues to remain in the “Clear” category, health officials are recommending that masks be worn while indoors, even for fully vaccinated people.

As reported August 13 in the Longmont Times-Call:

"As delta variant cases surge throughout Boulder County and the nation, public health officials on Friday updated their guidance to recommend everyone 2 years and older wear masks indoors regardless of coronavirus vaccination status.

The CDC recommends that all individuals, including vaccinated individuals, wear a mask indoors in public in counties with substantial or high transmission.
Boulder County Public Health spokesperson Angela Simental said Friday afternoon that Boulder County was still classified in the substantial transmission category, according to CDC data. However, by Friday evening, it had moved into high transmission." (Emphasis added.)

While it saddens me to have to share this news, I believe that we need to watch out for each other and for our neighbors. I have notified our church Trustees and our Re-Open Team that I will recommend we move back to wearing masks while in the sanctuary on Sundays. That will also mean a suspension of coffee hour after worship for now.

It has been a long time since March 15, 2020 and we are still not out of the woods yet with COVID. But I want you to be safe and well and I want others to be cared for by us. So let’s do what we can TOGETHER to get through this TOGETHER. May God continue to hold us close.

~Rev. David Burt
