FIPPOA Elections & Important Community Events and News

Dear Karen,

Where did the summer go??? Well, it's not over yet!!!

Fall Membership Meeting and FIPPOA Elections

On Saturday, September 17th, FIPPOA will hold its Fall Election and Community Meeting. There are four members running for four board positions, each to serve a 4-year term. They are Alan Brodherson, Greg Henniger, Andrew Kirtzman, and Henry Robin.

After sixteen years of service, Jim Vandernoth has decided not to seek another term on the bord.  Over the years, Jim has become synonymous with our harbor and marina. Working closely with boaters and staff, he has helped the Pines Marina reach the point where it now operates at full capacity with a waitlist for slip rentals. Jim has graciously agreed to continue overseeing the harbor’s weekend activities including tabling and ticket sales. Jim is a dear friend, and we will all miss him on the board, yet welcome his continued stewardship of the harbor.

In addition to the four board seats, this year we will also be electing four executive officers, each to serve 2-year terms. Allan Baum is running for re-election as our Vice President, as is Eric Sawyer our Treasurer. I will be seeking the privilege of serving a second term as your President. And current board members Alan Brodherson and Russell Saray are each seeking to become our next Secretary.

I would like to extend a special appreciation to our current Secretary, Gary Clinton, who agreed one year ago to step into the vacant position until the community could fill it through an election. Gary’s sound judgment and strategic thinking have been an invaluable contribution to our weekly Executive Committee meetings. I will miss his sage wisdom while still knowing that he is always a phone call or visit away. In his last official duty as our Secretary, Gary is overseeing this year’s election.

Here are the bios of the candidates for your review.

If you are a voting FIPPOA member, you should have already received your ballot at the address in your member profile. If you are not a FIPPOA member, you can join by clicking here, and will have only the option of voting at the meeting. If you already are a member and do not vote by mail, you may cast your ballot at the meeting.

After the election, we will conduct community business including updates on the many exciting projects that are now taking place. All members of the community are welcome to attend – property owners, renters, boaters, workers, anyone with an interest in and love for the Pines.

Anyone who would like to volunteer to help the day of the meeting, or for other volunteer opportunities, please click here and complete a volunteer form.

Trailblazers Park in the News!

The dedicated work by countless members of the community culminated on July 16th with the dedication and ribbon-cutting for Trailblazers Park. For those of you who were either unable to attend or who would love to relive that special moment, here is a video created by the uber-talented Pines resident, Isaac Namdar.

And for anyone who missed the press coverage Trailblazers Park has received in the ensuing weeks, here are links to several articles of interest.

What Would Marsha Do...

In the spirit of Trailblazers Park, specifically the desire to recognize LGBTQ+ trailblazers with emphasis on often overlooked or marginalized communities, we will celebrate Marsha P. Johnson’s August 24th birthdate with a panel discussion entitled, “What Would Marsha Do? The Ongoing Fight for Trans Rights,” on Saturday, August 27th from 11AM to 12:15PM at Whyte Hall.

This salon-style conversation will be hosted by FIPPOA’s Committee on Black Equality (CoBE) and FIPPOA’s Trailblazers Park Task Force. A special thank you to Iman Le Caire, one of our panelists, for approaching me just a short four weeks ago to discuss how we might honor trans voices and experiences in the Pines. Gratitude also to our other panelists, Faris Saad Al-Shathir, Eric Cervini, and Andy Stowers Forest.  CoBE founding member, Crayton Robey, will moderate this important community discussion. I strongly encourage you to attend.

Please take a few minutes to view this video from Eric Cervini which he sent to the Pines just before the Trailblazers Park dedication.

FIPAP’s “Pajama Game” – Get Your Tickets Now!

Labor Weekend wouldn’t be the holiday weekend that it is were it not for the annual tradition of FIPAP’s musical production at Whyte Hall. This year’s production is “The Pajama Game.” I am honored to be making my Pines stage debut, so I personally encourage you to get your tickets before they sell-out.

The Pines Conservation Society – Get These Tickets Too!

On Sunday, September 4th, the Pines Conservation Society will hold its premier summer event and fundraiser with a brunch and silent auction beginning at 11AM at Whyte Hall. Jim Pepper will be honored this year. There is limited capacity, so please purchase tickets today.

Monkeypox Vaccine

Over the past six weeks, I have sent out several newsletters announcing four Monkeypox vaccine PODs in both the Pines and Cherry Grove. While I have previously thanked the officials from Suffolk County and New York State for their responsiveness in allocating scarce supplies to the Pines, I would like to give a special shout out to Northwell Heath, who administered the appointments and shots in the arm. These Northwell employees from many different locations across the Northwell system volunteered their weekends to staff the PODs in the Pines. We couldn’t have accomplished such a successful local vaccination program without them.

Thermacell Deer Tick Tubes -

The Pines Foundation funds the disbursement of Thermacell Tick Control tubes throughout the entire community. You will see them scattered in your yard at the beginning of the season and again at the end of summer. Developed at Harvard University School of Public Health, they help to prevent the spreading of Lyme disease to humans and pets by killing ticks. Mice, the primary source of Lyme causing ticks, are drawn to the cotton in the tubes and use it to line their nests, thereby enabling the specially treated cotton to eradicate ticks.

While Trailblazers Park has been in the news, so too have other institutional gems in the Pines. These news articles have also recently appeared emblematic of the uniqueness and exceptionalism of the Pines.
