A MESSAGE FROM
THE RABBI
Shabbat is intended to be a wonderful time in the life of a Jewish family. A weekly, wonderful time in the life of a Jewish family.

On Friday nights, it was rare for Sheri, Sammi, and me not to be joined at our home by another family or two or three. In the alternative, we went to another family for Shabbat dinner. As families gathered together, we lit candles, sang Shalom Aleichem and blessed our children. We sang Eishet Chayil (the last 22 verses of the Book of Proverbs), which praises the wife and mother of the family.

Before singing the Kiddush over the wine, we would go around and have each child say something good that his/her parent(s) did for him/her, that week. In the alternative we would have each child say something good that happened during the week, or something that he/she was hoping would happen in the week to come.

We would sing Kiddush as a group and then do Motzi over the Challah. Our Challah was plain or raisin or chocolate chip or cinnamon. Pieces were dipped in salt, or honey, or Hummus, or olive oil.

The group would then sit for dinner. Dinner usually started with soup (Chicken, vegetable, or squash). There were always multiple salads. The main course was usually, chicken, or brisket, or salmon. Often all three were serviced in various varieties. Desserts were numerous and, often, decadent. The table was never quiet. It was a joy. It was shabbat.

After dinner we would sing Birkat Hamazon(Grace After Meal) preceded by raucous singing of Zemirot (traditional Friday night songs). Though our group also loved to sing Simon & Garfunkel, the Beatles, and other more contemporary songs, for me, the traditional Zemirot set the tone for the rest of Shabbat.

Friday nights have created some of the warmest and most pleasant memories. In large part this is why The Ahad Ha-Am, (a cultural Zionist No less), said: “More than the Jews have kept Shabbat, Shabbat has kept the Jews”.

This Friday night we have the great honor and privilege of being joined again by Hazzan Sara Geller (I love whenever Hazzan Geller joins us). In addition to leading us in Friday night services, Hazzan Geller has a special treat in store for us.

After services, as we do the second Shabbat of every month, we will go into breakout rooms to have Shabbat dinner with smaller groups. After about 20 minutes or so, the breakout rooms will be asked to come back to the main zoom room at which time Hazzan Geller will teach the group about, and how to sing, two classic Shabbat Zemirot, Yah Ribon, and Tzur Mishelo.

Copies of the songs can be found below.

Join us for Shabbat, Join us for song. We look forward to seeing you this Friday evening at 6:00 pm.

ENDOWMENT FUND - NEW INFORMATION !!!!!!!

Herb and Selma z”l Shapiro established the first individual Endowment Fund in memory of his father, as part of the JCC’s Endowment Fund portfolio. Judith z”l & Donald Pripstein joined the Shapiros and established The Pripstein Family Endowment Fund.

As recently reported, Don Pripstein pledged another $50,000 to establish The Judith & Donald Pripstein Endowment Fund.

As a result of Don’s letter, another member has stepped forward to establish an individual Fund. He pledged $50,000 and made a substantial first payment. The announcement of this will take place as soon as all the naming particulars are decided.

A donation of at least $50,000 to the endowment fund will allow the donor to name one of the funds as the donor wishes. All such named funds will be joined together to be part of the Endowment Fund portfolio.

Endowment funds are necessary to ensure the continuation and well being of our congregation. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this portfolio, whether as a specific named individual fund, or as a general donation. The donation can be spread over one, two, or three years, and can be paid via check, donation of appreciated stock, wills, or from the RMD of your IRA or 401K account. Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.
