New CDC Recommendations for Influenza, RSV and Wildfire Smoke

The CDC has adopted the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations for the 2023-2024 influenza vaccination. Small changes were made including an acknowledgement of the updated flu vaccine composition and a change in the recommendations for people with egg allergies. September and October continue to be the best times for most people to get vaccinated.

CDC recommends a single dose of the new Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccine for people ages 60 years and older using shared clinical decision-making. Adults at the highest risk for severe RSV illness include older adults, adults with chronic heart or lung disease, adults with weakened immune systems, and adults living in long-term care facilities. The CDC released a Health Advisory regarding wildfire smoke exposure, which continues to be a threat to at-risk populations. As part of emergency preparedness, monitor for signs and symptoms of adverse effects, especially in people with lung and heart disease. Air Now tracks and reports air quality data at state, national, and global levels using the color coded US Air Quality Index.

COVID-19 Hospitalizations, Deaths Trending Down; Vaccination Rates Need Improvement

While COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and death rates continue to decline, vaccination remains a vital tool to protect public health. One dose of the updated (bivalent) vaccine is required for individuals to be considered up to date.
