Annual Meeting Reveals a Year of Challenges & Adaptation
|
|
On Tuesday, December 15th, Camp Kawartha hosted its first ever virtual Annual General Meeting. Registered guests watched in safety as Board Chair, Jason Huffman delivered an overview of the Camp’s challenges and accomplishments over the past fiscal year (October 1-September 30).
“I am amazed at how much has changed in one year.” remarked Huffman. “For one of the few times in our long history, because of COVID-19, we were obliged to cancel summer camp. In addition, all our outdoor education programs were cancelled. However, I am proud of how flexible and adaptable Camp Kawartha’s staff were. They responded by creating a virtual summer camp and starting a Forest School for those parents whose children were not ready to go back to regular school. Our organization also took the opportunity to build during a time of relative quiet. This is an opportunity for us to upgrade our facilities and so we are constructing an innovative Health Centre, an exemplar of sustainable building in action.”

January Registration Open for Forest School
|
|
The first full term of Forest School drew to a close on December 18th. While the kids were eager to start their holidays, they were sad that their unique adventure was coming to a close. Some students will be returning to school and others will join us next term. The students had all grown close and it will be sad for us to see some of these students leave. But we are looking forward to the next term of Forest School which is now open for registration.
The Winter session begins January 11th and runs through to March 12th. We will also be offering a spring session.
We continue to be innovative and will be offering Forest Camp each Friday throughout the term. New this term, parents can register their kids for this one-day option.

And the next few months look challenging as well. If you value the work that Camp Kawartha does in connecting children to nature and fostering stewardship, please consider a gift to help us continue to deliver this important mission.

Our greatest need now is funding for our sustainable Health Centre. We still need raise funds to complete the building and to outfit it. We’ll need desks, computers, and office chairs; beds, bedding, and pillows, stethoscopes and thermometers.
With your support, we can move forward into the New Year ready to finish the new healthcare facility, and have it fully ready to go for summer campers 2021!

Animal Showcase: Reindeer or Caribou
|
|
In this segment we usually choose an animal we may have seen ourselves or one we know readers are likely to see first-hand. However, given the season and the fact that the writer wants to stay on the good side of the Jolly Old Elf, it seemed appropriate to feature the Reindeer.
Reindeer, more commonly known as Caribou in Canada, are members of the deer family. I had no idea, but there are two types – tundra and forest (or woodland). The tundra branch migrates in great herds as part of an annual cycle. Their herd numbers can be as high as half a million and they can range up to 5000 kms! The forest branch does not have those numbers and actually live in family groups of six to 15, ranging up to 500 sq kms.
In summer grasses, sedges, green leaves are typically eaten while in winter they rely heavily on lichens, usually called ‘reindeer moss’.
Reindeer numbers, stressed by global warming, have crashed. Declines of more than half the population have occurred in the last two decades! Considered a key species of the north, these declines have implications for the overall Arctic food web.
