Dear Wolves,

This remote setting has clearly been more inequitable and impersonal for students. Next week, I will provide more insight into these equity issues at Eastlake and our ongoing efforts to provide a positive, successful learning experience for all students. However, I want to first recognize Black History Month and the Black Lives Matter “Week of Action.” We have included more information below, but Eastlake remains committed to creating a more equitable and just school for students. That includes ensuring a successful, safe learning experience for our Black scholars, and educating all our students about Black excellence and ongoing issues of systemic racism.

We will also continue to make this remote setting more personable. First, we have worked with student leaders on a Cameras on Campaign. We have asked teachers for help to make this a classroom norm, especially during class discussions and student collaboration in breakout rooms.

Now we ask that all students help us in this effort. We still will not require cameras to be on because some students may not feel comfortable, and some might have inadequate internet bandwidth. However, we know learning is social, and students need to talk to each other about what they are learning. We also know human interaction is good for our well-being and having cameras on makes that interaction more personable.

Please do your part in this movement, as we have heard that the main obstacle is that many students are willing, but don’t want to be the only ones.

February is Black History Month. Eastlake will be kicking off our month long recognition of Black History by participating in the national Black Lives Matter at School Week. Eastlake's Student Equity Board put together short daily lessons for teachers to engage students in a week of action focused on Black Life, Black Liberation and racial justice. Each lesson encourages teachers and students to reflect on how they can make Eastlake and our local community a more racially just and equitable space while teaching students about the demands of Black Lives Matter and the 13 Principles of Black Lives Matter. While we recognize this is a national movement for a Week of Action, we know celebrating black joy, leaning into tough conversations about race and unpacking our biases and privileges are responsibilities we bear all year long. Eastlake is thankful for our relationship with the Sammamish Safeway. Since Thanksgiving, Safeway has donated almost $1,000 in food items for EHS families in need. Along with other donations from InvestED, EHS has delivered over $2,000 in food items to our families, in addition to our standard weekly Pantry Packs. If your family needs assistance or you know someone who does, please have them reach out to their Counselor. And if you are in our local Safeway, be sure to thank them for their support!

Eastlake’s 2nd Semester started on Monday, January 25th. If a student is absent from a class, the parent/guardian has 5 days to excuse this absence. This time extension is due to Remote Learning and is only applicable for this school year.

Students do not have scheduled classes on Wednesdays. However, Wednesdays are still part of the 180 days that Washington State has set aside for their education. This is NOT a day off from school.

Every Friday, data from Teams or any other Microsoft product (except for Forms) will be extracted to determine if a student engaged in Asynchronous learning on the previous Wednesday. If the student did not participate, they are marked absent in period 11. This system was put in place to support teachers who were having to check engagement themselves, student by student for 150+ students per teacher.

For future Wednesdays, please sign in to Teams and complete an assignment for any class that you choose. This will keep your name off of the Teams data sheet and prevent an Absent mark.

Earlier this fall, several of our orchestra, band, and choir students accepted the challenge to create an in-depth audition video for this year’s All-Northwest/All-State Honor Ensembles.  We just received our notification: These musicians have been honored by a blind panel of judges as some of the most accomplished musicians from high school music programs in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska, Montana, and Wyoming.

Evergreen Teen Book Award: Voting for the Evergreen Teen Book Award will begin February 1^st and end April 1^st. If you’re a current sophomore or junior interested in Washington Network for Innovative Careers (WANIC), the application for the 2021-22 academic year opens on February 2nd. Once your application is processed and Eastlake’s master schedule for the 2021-22 school year is finished (usually in June), Eastlake counselors and the College and Career Center will work with you to adjust your original EHS schedule requests. Applications for WANIC’s summer semester will open after spring break.

The LWSD College and Career Specialist February 3rd Live Wednesday Virtual Career Panel features professionals from the world of Forensics. If you’re taking a CTE Dual Credit eligible class this year (see Eastlake’s list), check out this February 4th at 3 pm session explaining how the PNW College Credit consortium and CTE Dual Credit works + a step-by-step walk-through for creating an account and registering your Eastlake-eligible class. Eastlake and the PTSA are working on plans to celebrate our seniors this year. We are working within a changing environment of constraints to create the best possible options for our seniors.

We are creating an advisory committee that includes senior parents (class of 2021 only), senior students, school staff and PTSA chairs to create an inclusive and transparent planning effort that considers the voices of all parties involved.
