Happy Holidays
When it comes to the holidays, we are filled with visions of joy, excitement, anticipation, and, dare I say, an overall expectation for jolliness. We have been prescribed these “picturesque” images of families and friends reconnecting and relaxing. While we may commiserate in the stress associated with the rush to meet shopping deadlines or the time we must spend with the in-laws, overall, we have been told and shown that we should be happy.
The reality is, for some individuals, the holidays are a time of great stress and anxiety. Financial troubles, strained family relationships, personal loss, loneliness, and the media’s portrayal of holidays can leave people depressed, withdrawn, or even angry. Activities in which some people find joy, can create emotional distress for others.
How can we use our coaching skillset and mindset during this time to support others?
- Understand that your experience and perspective about the holidays may not be the same as others.
- Be aware and notice opportunities to support someone having a challenging time.
- Provide others with the gift of your presence, paired with engaged listening.
- Ask questions that support others in exploring and discovering new insights into their challenge, without jumping into fix-it mode.
- Provide positive feedback that can fill their bucket and spread joy.
- Ask them how you can support them during this time.
If you are personally experiencing emotional obstacles associated with the holidays, reach out to a trusted thought partner. If additional support is needed, seek a mental health professional.
