Parsha Talk

  • Pick a number between 1 and 9
  • Multiply this number by 2
  • Add 5
  • Multiply your number by 50.
  • If you have already had your birthday this year, add 1771. If you have not, add 1770.
  • Now subtract the year that you were born.
You should end up with a 3 digit number. The first digit will be your original number, and the last 2 digits should be your age!
How does this bit of "mathemagic" tie in to this week's parsha?!

From the desk of the STEAM Lab

This week in STEAM we learned about trees for Tu B'Shvat! We planted apple seeds, brought nature indoors for art, went to the magical forest to measure tree widths, made bark impressions, and learned about the rings of a tree!
Germination

While learning about plant life cycles, 6th graders in Ms. Goldstein's life science class are observing germination in lima beans. Once they sprout, they will plant the beans inside of a dark obstacle course in order to observe plant tropism - how plants will grow toward the smallest amount of light.
Spanish Elective

Middle school students in Mrs. Rosenzweig's class have learned a lot of vocabulary including colors, animals, clothing, and enough grammar to make sentences. This week Sarah Nevah enjoyed playing the role of teacher's assistant and teaching her friends.
Beren + Oberman = oBERmEN

Please make some time to listen to our new RMBA podcast! Dr. Oberman has begun to interview some of the most important people at RMBA—our teachers! Take a moment to listen to Gveret Erlichman and Mrs. B (Bonnie Blumberg), and subscribe to hear from more long-time, amazing Beren educators! A new episode drops each Friday.
Hopping Hats

ECE3 students in Morah Alissa and Morah Sandy's class made grasshopper hats this week to represent the 8th plague "arbeh" (locust) in this week's parsha.
Pumped up for Math

7th Grade students in Mrs. Rosenzweig's class were pumped to take a two-step equations quiz by playing kahoot! The class got all the questions correct!
Operation Dugo

As part of Hebrew and Judaic elective classes with Ori and Aviva, the middle school and high school took part in "Mivtza Dugo" (operation Dugo) in honor of Dugo Leiter, a Holocaust survivor who, on the yearly anniversary of the day he left Auschwitz, eats Falafel to celebrate his victory. Once a private and family celebration, now Operation Dugo is celebrated all around the world, by eating Falafel and holding up signs with the words "Am Yisrael Chai, Kayam v'mabsut" (Am Yisrael is alive, well, and thrilled to be here!).
Ethical Dilemmas

Rabbi Ouzzan's Seminar class was tasked to prepare ethical dilemma presentations in pairs. Jeremy Morgan and Jake Teller discussed what Judaism would want an individual to do if he/she only had one day out of jail. Which Mitzvot have priority? Molly Goldstein and Yael Passy discussed how far we go to save a life in Judaism. Julia Brown and Eve Vaknin discussed whether in Judaism we can sacrifice a life to save another.
Rodeo Art

Books, Blankets, and Bears

Kindergarten through 2nd grade students enjoyed “Books, Blankets, and Bears” with Dr. McKernan. The reading event, with its camping theme, was a celebration of literacy for young readers. Research supports the fact that engagement in literacy promotes a love of books—and we all know that “readers are leaders.” Read aloud time, independent reading, reading to stuffed bears, and learning about bears in our non-fiction selections are all activities to support our youngest readers.
