“Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”
-Mark 10:35-

“I got a promotion!” Words the world loves to hear. We are used to feeding our ravenous appetite for upward mobility. We want the credibility and the responsibility to prove we have what it takes to lead. We want our special seat next to the boss in the boardroom. Soon we sit in our new leather-backed chairs we might even think, “Maybe I could be the boss soon.” We are quickly lulled to sleep by positions and titles.

James and John demanded that Jesus give them both a promotion. Jesus had just told them he was to be delivered into the hands of his accusers, condemned to death, and handed over to the Gentiles to be mocked, spit on, flogged, and killed before being raised to life from death.

With Jesus’ haunting words still echoing off the nearby hills… James and John responded with an unexpected demand.

“Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”

Incredible. They demanded a special seat for themselves and Jesus had something to say about that...

We do the same. We want upward mobility. Jesus offers something much different, he came down to us to live among us, be betrayed, arrested, condemned, flogged, spit upon, and crucified for us.

The other disciples were no better, they were furious, probably because they didn’t think of asking Jesus for the seat first! Even when we make ridiculous demands our Lord responds in love with how he sacrifices and serves.

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus was willing to go down, to the very bottom, the depths of Hell and back suffering God’s judgment against sin, and drinking the cup of His Heavenly Father’s wrath. He does this to gather the lost and give his life as a ransom for sinners like James and John, and you and me. Thanks be to God!

Join us Sunday as we continue our sermon series Expect the Unexpected: Unexpected Demand.

I can’t wait!
The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

The Samaritan’s Purse project Operation Christmas Child collects shoebox gifts filled with fun toys, school supplies, and hygiene items and delivers them to children in need around the world to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way. For many of these children, the gift-filled shoebox is the first gift they have ever received. Grace Fellowship is so excited to participate in Operation Christmas Child this year! You can get involved by...

  1. Start with a shoebox from church (Organized by Gaby)
  2. Pack your box
  3. Choose boy or girl and age
  4. Pick gifts: something to love, to wear, for school, for personal hygiene, to play with.
  5. Label your box
  6. Pray for the child who will receive your box.
  7. Drop off at church by November 21st, 2021

A message from Nicole Atencio...

Young Life is a youth ministry that has been in the valley for 13 years. Our mission is to introduce adolescents to Jesus Christ and help them grow in their faith. Our hope is to give EVHS students from all walks of life the chance to know Jesus through Club, Campaigners, and Camp. We meet every Wednesday night, alternating between Club and Campaigners.

YL Club

Young Life Club is the larger group with fun events every week like mud volleyball, line dancing, capture the flag, skits, and more. This is a safe, relaxed, and non-threatening environment where kids can laugh, feel valued, and hear the Gospel. I encourage our youth at Grace Fellowship to come to YL Club and invite their friends who may have never had a chance to know Jesus.

YL Campaigners

Young Life Campaigners is a smaller, focused, and more intentional group where young people come together with the leaders to learn more about what it means to love and follow Jesus. We go deep into the word, discuss life and life with Jesus.

YL Camp

Young Life Camp is an awesome opportunity for kids to see Christ in a way that they might not see Him at home. We go to a winter and a summer camp every year. I went to these camps when I was a student at EVHS 10 years ago and it had an incredible impact on my relationship with Christ.

We are so excited to be going to Crooked Creek Ranch in Fraser, Colorado this December 3rd-5th. We will be joining many other Young Life groups from around Colorado. We would love to bring as many high school students from Grace Fellowship as we can. We provide transportation. Spots are limited!

Please reach out to me with any questions. [email protected]

A place to give and a place to receive

The local community market is working to improve healthy food access in our community by rescuing food from local grocery stores, local farmers and redistributing it to any and all local families. In this way, they're reducing food waste while also making good food more accessible.

This outreach opportunity gives our church the chance to actively show the love of Jesus just up the road and in our community at large!

🍎What do our wonderful Market Assistant volunteers take care of?
Stocking the market and produce shelves, unloading and sorting grocery rescue donations, repackaging bulk food items, packing dry food boxes for community distribution, sorting produce boxes, composting food and recycling containers, sweeping, and sanitizing surfaces along with many other jobs within the shifts that can be of help.
