Justice is a topic that has been top of mind for me lately.

It is the theme for this year’s Principles of Community week, which starts today. I’ve also been doing some writing recently on the topic of just city design as the word “justice” is often invoked by planning and design professionals, but its meaning varies significantly.

As I have reflected on the word justice, I’ve taken pause to contemplate—what does justice really mean and how can we put it into practice?

Spotlight: Your Public Scholarship Community
Public Scholarship and Engagement is thrilled to welcome the 2022 cohort of Community Engaged Learning Faculty Fellows. Representing a variety of disciplines, these fellows will participate in a six-month program that is focused on bolstering experiential learning within the UC Davis community. This year's cohort will focus on public scholarship that is dedicated to equity and justice.
Two UC Davis public scholars have been elected as members of the National Academy of Engineering. Professors Kate Scow and Daniel Sperling join 13 other current UC Davis faculty members who are in the academy. Scow is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of soil microbial ecology in the Department of Land, Air and Water Resources. Sperling is a Distinguished Professor of civil and environmental engineering, and environmental science.
20-21 Public Scholarship Faculty Fellow Milmon Harrison took up a new role Jan. 1 as associate dean for academic programs in Undergraduate Education. His new portfolio includes serving as faculty director of the University Honors Program and providing academic leadership for the Undergraduate Research Center and the First-Year Seminars program.
UC Davis public scholars Mark Cooper and Michael Rios were named part of the 2022 HuMetricsHSS Community Fellows cohort. This national group is comprised individuals who are engaged in transforming academic culture at their own institutions. Cooper and Rios’ work is focused on how values-driven scholarship is recognized among faculty and administrators at UC Davis and how it is translated, or not translated, into the both official and implicit metrics that shape faculty practices at UC Davis.
UC Davis Public Scholarship and Engagement has launched a new fellowship program called Public Scholars for the Future that is focused on supporting doctoral students who are interested in or actively pursuing community-engaged research. The program includes a graduate-level class on public scholarship and funding for community-engaged scholarship.
