Dear Thunderbolt Families,
Welcome back! I hope all of you had a great summer and had time to relax with friends and family. It has been very exciting to open school and welcome 1200 students to campus. Just in the past month, our campus has been busy. We have hosted Student Check-In, Parent and Student Orientation, Open House, and district events.
I am going into my 29th year as an educator and have never been more enthusiastic about a school. We have great students, parents and staff all working hard to provide rich opportunities for our students.
At Mica Mountain, we have created a team which will provide our students an opportunity to develop skills to help them as they grow into adults. Our Vision Statement is to build a foundation for students to have an influence in the world through a wide range of academic and extracurricular opportunities with an emphasis on Academic Achievement, Leadership, Character Development, and Collaboration. These elements are woven into all courses and programs at Mica Mountain in order to best prepare students for their adult lives and to maintain high expectations of all stakeholders. It is the school’s goal that all Thunderbolts are people who not only have the motivation to grow as individuals, but to make each other and the environment we live in better.
Our staff strives to follow specific Guiding Principles to ensure we serve our parents and students as best we can by establishing Trust through Consistent acts of Clarity, Authenticity, Respect and Empathy.
I am proud to announce our 22/23 Site Council. Congratulations to the following individuals that will represent staff, parents, and students this year.
Heather Bersbach (parent rep.)
Andrea Black (parent rep.)
Nancy Davis (parent rep.)
Claudette Webb (staff rep.)
Matt Penland (staff rep.)
Chris Rich (staff rep.)
Navaeh Rodriguez (student rep.)
Ryan Riha (student rep.)
Lastly, please keep up with your child’s academics by using all of the resources on the MMHS Webpage. Our third year Back to School Red Carpet was a success!
This year is the year of many firsts and many more students. Our red carpet was filled with so many smiles, hugs, laughter, and fun-filled energy. The Thunderdome had so much school spirit and encouraging engagement for all grade levels. Each department had their moment in the spotlight! Let it be known at our campus we are Mountain Strong and we always strive with our mission B.O.L.T.S. Building Outstanding Leaders Through Service.
Shout out to photographers Tyler Sexton (11) and Karley Montenegro (11) for these great photos.

I am honored to introduce myself as the new Student Achievement Teacher at Mica Mountain High School. For the past 26 years, I have been a math teacher, dedicating my entire adult life to public education. I not only believe in the youth of America, I consider it a privilege to work with them daily.
As part of the monthly Thunderbolt Newsletter, I will share happenings from my office in a segment called “En-Lightning Updates.” Thank you for trusting us with the education of your children. I am excited to work alongside you this year and encourage you to contact me anytime with questions. My phone number is (520) 879-3809, and my email address is stickneyg@vailschooldistrict.org.
It’s early August, but classrooms are already filled with focused teachers and engaged students. This month, I want to share two opportunities for your students and a special invitation for parents of seniors. I encourage you to save or print this information.
First is our tutoring schedule. Teachers are ready and available during these times to provide additional support for student learning. Click Here for the Tutoring Schedule.
Second, our semester one testing opportunities. I highly encourage students to take college entrance exams multiple times because repeated testing increases a student’s score. I also want, in particular this month, to highlight the PSAT/NMSQT. This exam provides access to over $300 million in scholarships, qualifies students for the National Merit Scholarship Program, and provides access to personalized SAT practice. If your student is currently a junior, I recommend they sign up for this exam. Please see the following graphic for more information. The cost is $21 in our Spirit Store, and the deadline is September 9th.

Finally, if your child is a senior, please join us on Wednesday, August 10th at 6:00 PM in the Peak for Senior Survivor Night. At this meeting, Mr. Tritz and I will provide invaluable senior year information about various topics, including our Senior Exit Project, an exciting opportunity for our seniors to gain real-world experience in a chosen career.
Again, thank you for partnering with us to educate your children.
Best Regards,
Gretchen Stickney

My name is Christina Aguiar. This is my very first year at Mica Mountain High School and I am beyond excited to be here! I have been teaching in special education for 9 years now. I started off as a special needs paraprofessional at Acacia and then moved over to Esmond Station where I spent the last 8 years. I have been married for 21 years and have a beautiful 16-year-old daughter. I am looking forward to working with the Mica Mountain students and families.
Samantha Rottler
My name is Samantha Rottler, and I am a first-year teacher here at Mica Mountain! I was raised in the Vail School District, and I graduated from Cienega High School in 2018, so I am so excited to be back working for the district! Most of my free time is spent taking my kids from sports practice to sports practice. I also enjoy sports myself, from coaching to playing and watching. I am so excited for the year ahead and all the memories that will be made!
In our special services department, we offer several different classes for our students such as functional ELA, functional math, integrated science, life skills, and a cooking class.
