Ancient human relative walked like a human but climbed like an ape

COMP Assistant Professor Thierra K. Nalley, PhD, along with an international team of scientists from New York University, the University of the Witwatersrand, and 14 other institutions, published the discovery of two-million-year-old fossil vertebrae from an extinct species of ancient human relative, Australopithecus sediba, from Malapa, South Africa. The recovery of these fossils, together with previously discovered vertebrae, form one of the most complete lower backs ever found in the early hominid record and give insight into how this ancient species moved through its environment. The study concludes that A. sediba is both apelike and humanlike in its locomotor anatomy, exhibiting adaptations for both walking on the ground on two legs and climbing trees effectively.
