Supporting Child and Student Social, Emotional, Behavioral, and Mental Health Needs
The U.S. Department of Education released a new resource: Supporting Child and Student Social, Emotional, Behavioral, and Mental Health to provide information and resources to enhance the promotion of mental health and the social and emotional well-being among children and students. This resource highlights seven key challenges to providing school- or program-based mental health support across early childhood, K–12 schools, and higher education settings, and presents seven corresponding recommendations.

The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) released a Q&A entitled the Return to School Roadmap: Development and Implementation of Individualized Education Programs in the Least Restrictive Environment Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

Many students with disabilities are already addressing unique challenges in school. When they are bullied, it can directly impact their ability to learn and grow.

Bullying is not a harmless rite of childhood that everyone experiences. Research shows that bullying can negatively impact a child’s access to education and lead to:
  • School avoidance and higher rates of absenteeism
  • Lower grades
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Loss of interest in academic achievement
  • Increase in dropout rates
