Our office and the markets will be closed on Monday, June 19^th, in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day. This will be the 3^rd year of its treatment as a federal holiday.

We are writing this before the Fed’s June 14^th meeting, and David Kelly explains why a rate pause is likely, an opinion supported by Tuesday’s report of improving inflation rates.

Why are houses so expensive? This is a good breakdown of the history of housing prices and the components of the recent and steep increases we are all now familiar with.

Last week, many northeastern states saw high levels of pollution from Canadian wildfires. The unpredicted event has prompted some baffling questions.

Apple has released a new, very expensive “mixed reality” device- the Apple Vision Pro. It costs $3500 and early reviews are positive.

Have you wondered why children under 2 are not required to be seat-belted on airplanes? The FAA calculated that the increase in trip cost from the requirement would cause more families to choose to drive instead of fly. This decision would result in an additional 60 child highway deaths for every 1 child saved by an airplane seat belt requirement.

Q: My daughter just graduated from high school! What do I need to do to help her prepare for college?

A: This is a great time to learn about financial management. Before she leaves, sit down with her to create a spending plan. Most of her expenses will be level and recurring. Help her see the real expense of housing, tuition, and food. This should help her appreciate her discretionary resources and use them more mindfully. Encourage her to track spending and invite her to discuss what she has learned after a month or two on her own.

Also important is to help her feel like she can share mistakes and failures- not just successes. Seeing mistakes as a learning experience can help her develop healthy long-term money habits.
