GLOBAL ALERT FOR DC EDUCATORS AND STUDENTS
*Supplemental*
October 14, 2021

Hello All:

Since sending out yesterday's Global Alert, filled with free global education, language learning and study abroad opportunities, I became aware of two more fantastic programs (both virtual) open to DC high school students. Because the deadlines are fast approaching, I wanted to get this information out right away. Again, please help us share this information with those who might have an interest and would benefit - especially those students in Wards 5, 7, and 8. We will also be posting these opportunities and others on our website at www.globalizedc.org.

Virtual NSLI-Y
Program Dates: January-March 2022
Application Deadline: October 20, 2021
This US Department of State funded program introduces US high school students to languages critical to US national security – Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Russian, and Turkish – in the comfort of their own homes. Virtual NSLI-Y also introduces participants to the people and culture of places where the target language is spoken. Students are placed in virtual beginner-level classes of approximately 10 students each. Classes are 90 minutes long and meet twice a week for 10 weeks. Applications are now open for the Winter 2022 session. Applicants must be US citizens, 15-18 years old, and without prior formal instruction in the target language. The program is free to participants.

National Security Fellow Program
Program Dates: 15 weeks beginning February 1, 2022
Application Deadline: Nov 12, 2021
Girl Security believes that girls, young women, and gender minorities are the future of security – where a more secure nation is a more prosperous nation. The National Security Fellows program is a virtual 15-week knowledge and skills building program designed to allow participants to develop a meaningful understanding of national security, which includes government, law, cybersecurity, military, tech, academia, advocacy and more, and to cultivate the kind of relation-based networks with peers, mentors, and professionals needed to thrive in a male-dominated field. The Fellows program requires 3-5 hours of individual and collaborative learning, project management, and reflection per week for 15 weeks. There will be virtual sessions every other Tuesday during the program period. Fellows will earn a $1,000 stipend upon program completion. Applicants must be juniors or seniors in high school or in the first two years of college.
