PAPER! PAPER! PAPER!
 with Margo Klass

This meeting is all about expanding your knowledge of paper and starting a notebook of Paper Samples where you can keep track of papers you use, their attributes (such as dimensions, grain direction, and weight), and where to purchase them. You will begin several pages of your sampler at the meeting as we talk about how to select papers for specific book-making purposes. We'll also have examples of books that illustrate how the papers have been successfully used. This knowledge will inform and inspire book projects to come!

We will provide pages designed for labeling paper samples, several sets of samples, plastic sleeves to hold them, and a "PAPER SAMPLES" title plate. You can put them into a binder later, or better yet, bring one with you. A 3-ring white, 1" binder is perfect to begin your library of paper samples.

Please bring:
**Roll of double-stick tape**
3-ring binder (optional)
Scissors, and p encil or pen
Papers you would like to discuss, time permitting

Book Exchange Theme: Mixed media

STUDIO SESSION
Coptic Stitch Binding REVIEW
with Mary Maisch and Kathy Dietrich

Sunday, April 8,  12:00-4:00pm
NBG Studio
Caribou Building, Suite 205
3550 Airport Way

$40 NBG members
$50 non-members
$5 materials fee

This Studio Session is for binders who have previously taken
a Coptic Binding class.

Join Mary Maisch and Kathy Dietrich for a review of the versatile but somewhat elusive Coptic Stitch Binding. This binding technique requires regular practice to maintain memory of its peculiar twists, turns, and wraps. Wending one's way through Keith Smith's procedure alone can be daunting! If it has been a while since you last employed the Coptic stitch, join us for this refresher. We will warm up with a small model book that requires just six needles, and then you will work on your own new or unfinished project that you bring to the class. See lists below.

What we will supply:
Model book - board covers, sections, and waxed linen thread

What you should bring:
Needles - 6-12 blunt tipped tapestry needles, #22, or similar
Pair of pierced board covers, ready to sew
Prepared text block - 8-10 sections, pierced and ready to sew
Waxed linen thread, 4 ply, for your project
Awl
Piercing cradle or strip of foam core
Needle nose pliers
Tweezers
Scissors
Small bench or box that can raise book closer to eye level as you sew

If you will be cutting paper for your book sections, you will also need your cutting mat, knife, extra blades, and rules.

Class size limited to 10. Register with instructor here

UAF Summer Sessions
Bookmaking Workshop: Woven Spine Bindings
June 1-3, Murie Building, UAF campus
Margo Klass, instructor

The spotlight of this binding is on the spine where the texture of colored threads woven back and forth provides the background for further embellishment possibilities, including braids, beads, and knotting.  The binding can accommodate any number of sections, each of which is sewn separately and then connected to each other at the spine. In this workshop you will create two books, each with a distinct personality determined by your choices of papers, palette, and embellishments.

Instructional fee: $155
Materials Fee: $25
Class size limited-3 seats remain
