Getting the Most Mileage Out of Your Music
|
I don’t know about you, but this spring seems to be busier than normal. Spring is an exciting time of year in which my handbell students get to play at a number of events. They may only play one or two selections at each event, but this allows them to get more mileage for the work they put into learning the music. Here is an example of how I accomplish this with my middle school ensemble, an extra-curricular group that rehearses for 40 minutes once or twice a week: This year they prepared three pieces which

they play with excellent musicianship. They played these pieces at a mass ring festival in March, a chapel presentation, and a competition in Southern California, and they will play them again at the vocal/handbell music spring concert. Each of these events allowed the students to improve upon their previous presentation in note accuracy and musicianship. After each event, they had the opportunity to listen or watch their performance and identify how they could further improve. I am really looking forward to their music at our spring concert in two weeks! My church handbell ensemble rehearses once a week for 30 minutes. Playing in worship once a month gives us the time to learn a new song for every time we play. This season, we were able to play music at a more difficult level because we played some pieces twice. For one selection, we played the same song for two consecutive months in different services. In a couple of weeks, we will be replaying a song that we played in the fall. This allowed us the time to learn the more difficult music. Whether your group is a church group or a school group, there’s an advantage to playing pieces multiple times. Not only do the ringers enjoy playing the music multiple times, but the people enjoy listening to them multiple times, too. It is fun to learn a lot of music throughout the year, but it is also really fun to be able to play music at more than one event.
Please check out the events that are happening this spring, summer, and fall. In Area 12, we have the Sierra Spring Ring (Northern Nevada) and the So Cal Spring Ring, both happening in May. At the end of July, there will be a director’s workshop in the LA Metro region, “How to Get the Most Out of Your Handbell Choir.” In October, the Redding Handbell Festival will take place in Northern California. Finally, National Seminar is happening July 11-15 in Irving, TX. I would love to see a lot of Area 12 representation at these events. Remember, if you have any questions, your board is here to help. Please reach out.

I hope you’re having a fabulous Easter season! I have a bit of news about our upcoming Spring Ring:
First of all, I’m afraid I have to cancel the Bronze Vision portion of the event due to low enrollment. Those who paid the additional fee for that will be reimbursed that portion of their registration.
However, the main event — Saturday’s massed ringing — is still on! I promised you I would not cancel it, and although we will probably not have a floor full of ringers like we’ve had in the past, we will be “small but mighty”. Our last Spring Ring was four years ago in 2019, and I have missed you all. I can’t wait to hear the beautiful music we will make that day!
If you’ve been meaning to register, but haven’t yet, there is still time to register for the event. The registration form is available here. (You can also register at the door, but we do appreciate a bit of advanced notice, if possible.)
I am so excited to see you all in just four weeks’ time — it’s been far too long!
My best,
-Michèle

Teachers: Would you like the use of a three octave set of handbells or handchimes to add interest and a new dimension to your music class?
Area 12 encourages schools and other educational institutions, both public and private, to develop educational programs using handbells and handchimes.
