SCARCE Celebrates 32 Years!
|
Happy birthday to SCARCE!
Help us celebrate 32 years of environmental education and recycling efforts - join a workshop, share a post, or just stop in and say hello. Save the date for our Open House on Saturday, September 17, which is a great way to see our work up close.

ABC's of Recycling: H for H-H-W
What's Too Toxic to Trash?
|
This month's ABC's starts with 2 H's: Household Hazardous Waste.
What is it? Why is it so bad? And where does it go? Get some answers and learn how to protect our water and soil.
|
|
IMPORTANT NOTE about the Naperville Household hazardous waste facility:
Due to a fire at an Illinois EPA’s waste processing plan, Naperville’s facility CANNOT currently accept the following items: pesticides, fertilizers, aerosol cans, asbestos materials, batteries (marine, sump pump and non-alkaline), household cleaners, drain openers, pool chemicals, and unknown hazardous substances.
A full list of what is/is not accepted is available at www.naperville.il.us/hhw. Please check the list before bringing items to the facility, which may see increased wait times due to these changes. Questions? Call 630-420-6095.

Thinking Fall Lawn Treatments?
Take Care of Our Lightning Bugs
|
Having your lawn treated this fall? Blowing away all the leaves? Consider the impact of your yard maintenance on one of summer's most de-LIGHT-ful insects. Fireflies need damp, leafy areas to survive. Currently endangered by pesticides and a loss of habitat, fireflies need your help. Make your yard or local park a place that's welcoming to fireflies.
Read more about how to help here and here.

Literacy at the Laundromat is Growing
|
Three new towns have joined our "Literacy at the Laundromat" project. Laundromats in Bensenville, Villa Park, and Lombard now feature a cheerful, two-shelf, solid wood bookcase filled with books that patrons can take home.
With help from volunteers, these mini, free-libraries are stocked with books from SCARCE. You can support a laundromat library by donating funds, books, and 2 shelf bookcases or by volunteering to stock library shelves.
We need books in multiple languages too!
From Polish to Spanish, Tagalog to Urdu, children's books are especially needed.

SCARCE Donates items to Ukraine
SCARCE thanks the Addison Fire Protection District for donating an ambulance to Ukraine and allowing SCARCE to fill it with games, toys, and school supplies. In partnership with Danielle Cares for Chairs, SCARCE was also able to provide a child-sized wheelchair. We are always grateful for the opportunity to help people near and far.
If you zoom in on the ambulance, you can see messages of support for the people of Ukraine.

Plan ahead for Plant a Tree Day
|
New trees are needed more than ever -- to replace those lost in forest fires, to keep us cool during hot summers and to absorb carbon from our air.
September 28 is the official Plant a Tree Day. Fall is a great time to plant trees and give them time to root in over the winter. Where could you add a tree?
