WELCOME RIDE COMMISSIONING
This Thursday, October 14, we will be hosting a commissioning service for the CBFNC Welcome Ride. The commissioning will take place in our parking lot from 5:30-6:30pm, and you're encouraged to join us as we welcome different members of our CBFNC family to celebrate the work of the Welcome House. We'll hear from Larry Hovis, Marc & Kim Wyatt, and General Baptist Convention Executive Secretary-Treasurer, Tony Barr. This will be a smaller event than originally planned, due to the surge in recent COVID cases, but we still invite you to join us. If you're planning to join us, please email Leah, bring your own chair and park in the government lot.
CBFNC Executive Coordinator, Larry Hovis, and a small cycling team will be raising awareness and dollars by cycling about 160 miles over the course of three days from the NC Capital to the Coast on Thursday, October 14, through Sunday October 17.
Last year when CBFNC launched the Welcome House Community Network, there were seven Welcome House ministries in the network. Because of the generosity of many churches and partners, and individuals like you, last year's Welcome Ride raised over $20,000 and has helped this ministry grow to 24 Welcome Houses in just one year! An anonymous donor has issued a $10,000 challenge. That is, the donor will match donations from individuals up to $10,000. To donate to the Welcome House Ride, please visit this website.

The Adult Ministries Council has been working on a set of programs for this fall with the theme Celebrating Our Heritage with a View to the Future. Centerpoint will meet each week from 6:15-7:15pm in the fellowship hall, and is also available via zoom for those who would rather join us virtually. See the article below!
• October 13 - Pastor Emeritus Dan Day will join us in person as he talks about his book, Finding the Gospel: A Pastor’s Disappointment and Discovery, released last fall. Recounting his disappointment with his inherited understanding of the gospel as centered only on the evangelical Plan of Salvation, he explains his discovery of what he terms a "bigger gospel" centered on Jesus’ teaching concerning the Kingdom or Reign of God. The last section of the book is given to some of the changes this new perspective has meant for his thoughts about other topics. Time permitting, Dan may also get into the sequel book, Lively Hope: The Taste of God’s Tomorrow, to be released this fall.
• October 20 - Steve Pressley will talk about his new biography of former FBC pastor Randall Lolley, entitled Randall Lolley: Thanks for the Memories.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT SUPPER
Each week, dinner will continue to be from 5-6pm, tailgating style, in the parking lot. If it rains, your family may come inside the building and we'll all spread out between the Fellowship Hall, Lewis lobby, and 301/302. We have returned to requiring reservations for Wednesday night dinners; reserve your spot at this link to the page on the church website or by calling the church office. Let's all try to park along the perimeter of the parking lot, so we can leave the middle spaces for chairs/communal tailgating!

DEACON ELECTIONS
We have arrived at the time in FBC’s calendar to elect deacons, the spiritual leaders of the church who assist with congregational care. As with so many things in this pandemic, the process this year is again a little different. We will stay as true as we possibly can to the process outlined in the bylaws, while at the same time providing methods for voting that fit with our remote gatherings. The process will be as follows.
You have until October 31 to submit a ballot nominating up to 16 deacons (eight men and eight women). Those ballots can be submitted by printing off the form that will be provided and filling it out, or simply writing out your nominations on a piece of paper marked “Deacon Nominations 2021” and mailing it to the church at 99 N. Salisbury Street, Raleigh, NC 27603, attn: Jennie Herrick. The paper forms can also be dropped off in the ballot box that will be located in the library on the counter. In addition, nominations may be sent electronically by email to Jennie Herrick. That email should show “Deacon Nomination” in the subject line and list the nominees. Jennie will then print the form, cut off the identifying information, and place it in the deacon ballot box. At noon on Sunday, October 31, the tellers appointed by the Chair will gather in the library to count the ballots, and the Chair and Vice-Chair will then notify those selected.

MEMORIAL SERVICE
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Caralie Brown, long-time FBC member and founding member of Greystone Baptist Church, will be held at Greystone on November 13 at 2pm. Greystone is located at 7509 Lead Mine Road in Raleigh.

VIRTUAL RACE & HOUSING FORUM
On Sunday, October 17, at 3pm, our church will gather virtually with St. Paul AME, First Baptist Wilmington St., Edenton Street UMC, the Raleigh Moravian Church, and other churches that are part of Habitat's Downtown Faith Coalition to watch Segregated By Design, a 20-minute documentary based on the book The Color of Law. This short film examines the often forgotten history of how local, state, and federal governments imposed racial segregation in cities nationwide. We will watch the film together on Zoom, and then break out into smaller groups to discuss. Dr. Chapman and

TOY JOY GUESTS
The first volunteer opportunities for Toy Joy will be Friday, November 5, and Saturday, November 6. This is the weekend before the actual event (November 13 and 14), and we will be filling the requests for toys that have come into our online store and packing them for pickup by our guests. We will have two shifts each day: 9am-12pm and 1-4pm. For the safety of all our volunteers, masks will be required and we ask that you only volunteer if you have been fully vaccinated. We are grateful for all of our volunteers who gathered this past Sunday afternoon to pack meals for Rise Against Hunger. We were able to pack over 7,500 meals to help stop hunger around the world! We are hopeful that next year we'll be able to gather back in the convenience of our Fellowship Hall together, and even share a meal before our packing begins. FREE BOOK GIVE-AWAY
The church library is sponsoring a book give-away in the Lewis building lobby. Members are invited to take one or more books the library can no longer use. Some books are duplicate copies; others are donated books the library does not need; still others are older books that have not been checked out in years. With limited shelving, the library volunteers are making space for new books of current interest.

RANDALL LOLLEY BIOGRAPHY AVAILABLE
By now, many of you know that Steve Pressley has written a biography of our beloved former pastor and Baptist icon Randall Lolley, and that Steve will be presenting a program on the book at our church Wednesday night, October 20, at 6:15pm. The added good news is that we have copies of the book available in the church office for $24 (a discount off the cover price of $30). If you would like a copy of Randall Lolley: Thanks for the Memories, you may purchase it in the office (please note “Lolley Biography” on any checks made out to the church). Steve will sign copies when he is with us. We look forward to honoring this beloved saint of our faith, along with his co-laborer Lou!

TOY JOY DONATIONS
Thanks to all who brought donations in September or have shipped new donations directly to the church. There are two additional opportunities to bring in your new or gently used donations. These will be the last days we will collect used toys this year.
• Wednesday, October 13, 5:30-7pm – Children’s Worship Room (229)
• Sunday, October 17, 12- 2pm – Fellowship Hall
Please use the following guidelines to prepare your gently-used donations:
• Wash all stuffed animals. Please do not donate stuffed animals that are ripped at seams or are still stained after washing.
• Replace and/or remove all dead batteries from toys. If old batteries have corroded in the toy, please do not donate it.
• Make sure puzzles have all pieces. Please tape puzzle boxes to indicate they are complete.
• Make sure games have all pieces, including instructions. You can often find replacement parts on Amazon, or instructions can be found online and printed.
• Make sure toys are clean and have any pieces needed to make them a complete toy. This might include instructions, depending on the toy. Toy instructions can often be found online and printed if you no longer have them.
• We will accept Lego and similar sets that are missing pieces, but please let us know so we don’t gift that as a complete set.
Please do not bring toys to the church at other times as there is no one to sort them and no place to store them. If you prefer to ship your donations directly to the church, wish lists for Amazon and Walmart are below. Thank you for your continued support of this ministry!

OCTOBER MISSION PROJECTS -
CROP WALK & TOY JOY
Crop Walk
For years, FBC has participated in the local CROP Hunger Walk. Funds raised support these local agencies: Catholic Parish Outreach Dorcas Ministries, Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC, North Raleigh Ministries, and Urban Ministries of Wake County. In addition, global efforts are supported through the work of the Church World Service, which has a huge refugee ministry and works locally with the Welcome House. There has never been a greater need as each of these agencies is stretched beyond belief to address hunger insecurity during this pandemic.
Greater Triangle Area CROP Hunger Walk has canceled the mass walk from Pullen Park because of COVID safety concerns. FBC members are still encouraged to register for the walk and join our FBC team. We are planning a gathering at FBC on October 31 to walk as a team around downtown. We will relay more details soon. You may also walk around your neighborhood or with smaller groups from FBC. Joining the FBC CROP Team is important to show the commitment FBC has to address hunger locally and globally. You may register for CROP and join our team here.
Registering makes it easier for our team leaders to contact you with supportive emails and to distribute information you may share to increase your fundraising for CROP. We also can contact you with our alternative plans for the Walk. One very effective fundraising tool is to post a Facebook fundraiser with just a few clicks on your personal page (established when you register). Facebook charges CROP no fees on the money raised through the Facebook platform.
Our children’s and youth ministries have both committed to supporting CROP this year. Both will be using different strategies to participate in a walk and raise funds. The children and youth have both established Facebook fundraisers. Funds raised by each group are counted toward the $3,000 goal for FBC.
Please consider sharing these fundraisers on your own Facebook page by copying and pasting the URL in a post on your page. Donations are accepted through all of the FBC electronic platforms and here. Checks should be made out to "CROP Hunger Walk/CWS" and given to our financial office and will be delivered to CROP with the checks our team “walkers” receive in support. Thanks for your support of CROP Hunger Walk this year.
Toy Joy
Our annual Toy Joy event will be a drive-thru pickup, like last year, rather than inviting our guests into the church to shop for gifts for their children. We plan to give each family a gift card for groceries again this year as well as toys and filled stockings. If you would like to make a donation to help with the cost, you may write a check to FBC and put Toy Joy in the memo line, and deliver it to the church financial office. There is also a link to donate electronically for this on the church website. There will be signups coming out soon to volunteer on the days we put the gift boxes together for our guests (Nov. 5 & 6) and for the weekend of the event (Nov.13 & 14). We look forward to your participation.
