AAHS Life Science students assist with tree identification program

|
Mrs. Jessica Hogan and Mrs. Stephanie McAleer attend Lakemont Park's Arbor Day Celebration
|
|
Ninth grade Life Science students in Mrs. Hogan, Mrs. Gardner and Mrs. McAleer's classes partnered with Lakemont Park on their new Tree Identification Program initiative. Students were assigned a species of tree from the park and worked several days to research facts about their tree. Lakemont Park officials created plaques for each tree in the park identifying both the tree's common and botanical name. A QR code displayed on each plaque allows park visitors to view the students' research information on each specific tree.
"The students did a wonderful job on this project," said Mrs. McAleer. "This was a collaborative effort with Lakemont Park and we were thankful for the opportunity to involve our students in this project."
Be sure to check out the Tree Identification Program the next time you visit Lakemont Park!

Since 2004, Sandi Smith from the Young Reader's Council has shared a very important ant-tobacco and drug message with Altoona Area School District second grade students. As part of the program students receive a personalized book from Homer that reinforces the importance of making good choices. Students are surprised when they receive their books and begin to read about their personal adventure that includes the name of their favorite friend.
The pandemic has kept Homer from visiting the students and sharing his very important message in person, but, Mrs. Smith has made sure to continue the message through the delivery of the books to students.
Penn Lincoln students (above) received their books last week.
Along with the books, students receive a word find puzzle, coloring page, goal sheet and a special letter from Homer.
The program is sponsored in part by the AASD Foundation.
