AUTHOR /COMPOSER COMMENTS is a section on the website’s song pages which allows space for background information from those who have created the words and/or music. It’s located at the bottom of the first column of the song 'home' pages and ranges in length from a single phrase to more lengthy reflections.
After Walter Farquharson completed reflections for each of his titles, he was drawn to Shirley Erena Murray’s poetry as found on the site. In late Spring 2021, Walter began writing similar reflections for Shirley's lyrics. This was (and continues to be) a tremendously ambitious project. Beginning with the 'A' titles, he has spent the balance of 2021 working alphabetically until he recently entered the 'W' selections!
These reflections are an especially valuable addition to the website. The generosity of spirit represented by one poet being moved to go deeper into the offerings of another represents a profoundly important and gracious modelling of collegiality. Often in this tiny fishbowl we call the church we, as musicians and authors of all kinds, become self-absorbed out of perceived necessity — and often because there is so much we wish to do within the constraints of real-life schedules.
Many will be aware that Shirley died in January 2020. It may seem odd to say this, but I’ve observed Walter and Shirley becoming closer and closer to one another this year through this creative process of his. Sharing deep friendships with each of them and their spouses individually, I used to regret them not being able to meet one another. In some ways, at last they have.
Walter lost his own life partner and soulmate this year. It occurs to me that this current creative 'partnership' between Walter and Shirley is likely one of the warmest, spirit-filled, collaborative "phoenix rising" occurrences I have experienced.
Please don’t overlook these meaningful reflections. I’m so grateful that this rich and precious resource vein resides on my website, free for anyone to use in their own planning or personal meditation. I am beyond grateful for having been privileged to know and love Walter & Joan and Shirley & John.
It would be fairly easy at this time to reflect on the recent years of crap (yeah, a lengthy thesaurus search yielded no adequate substitute). I choose instead to give thanks for those who continue to mentor and nurture me on this amazing journey.
Season’s blessings, dear friends,
Ron
