April 2023
Let's Celebrate the Diversity Within and Around Us!

Celebrate Diversity Month has traditionally been a month where organizations appreciate and recognize the diverse cultures and backgrounds that make up their community and the unique perspectives each member brings to the organization.

Diversity is a core value at PAFA, and we are proud to have a community of educators, students, creators, artists, and leaders that reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. We hope that this month you will be challenged to share personal experiences and insights, participate in activities that will help you learn more about different cultures, and reflect on the progress we have made towards becoming a more inclusive and diverse society.

Here are 10 ways you can celebrate and participate in Celebrate Diversity Month:

  1. Attend cultural events: Attend events that celebrate different cultures, such as festivals, concerts, and food fairs.
  2. Learn about different cultures: Take the time to learn about different cultures, customs, and traditions. Read books, watch movies, and explore different foods.
  3. Volunteer in diverse communities: Volunteer in diverse communities and participate in community service projects that promote social justice and equality.
  4. Host a cultural potluck: Organize a potluck where everyone brings a dish that represents their cultural background.
  5. Engage in intercultural communication: Make an effort to engage in intercultural communication by listening to others, asking questions, and sharing your own experiences.
  6. Advocate for diversity and inclusion: Advocate for diversity and inclusion in your workplace, school, and community. Raise awareness about the importance of inclusion and celebrate diversity.
  7. Join a diversity group: Join a diversity group or organization that promotes inclusion and celebrates diversity.
  8. Take a diversity and inclusion training: Take a diversity and inclusion training course to learn more about different cultures and how to interact with people from diverse backgrounds.
  9. Learn a new language: Learn a new language to communicate with people from different cultures and to appreciate their customs and traditions.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Sexual violence is a pervasive problem on college campuses, in our workplaces, and in society at large, and PAFA is not immune to its effects. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that our students, faculty, and staff feel safe and supported on our campus, and our duty to take preventative measures to protect our every member of our community. By prioritizing sexual prevention efforts, we can create a culture that not only prevents sexual violence but also supports survivors

When we announced the requirement of our annual Title IX and Sexual Prevention workshops on the EverFi platform (now Vector Solutions) we informed you that they would provide foundational tools so that we can approach sexual misconduct with a common language and a streamlined remediation process. The requirements under Act 55 present another opportunity for us to build on that knowledge to foster an environment that promotes well-being and empowers individuals to speak out against sexual violence. And we are very excited to partner with WOAR: The Philadelphia Center Against Sexual Violence and Women Against Abuse.

Thank you to everyone who attended our Sexual Violence Prevention workshop on March 24th. As leaders, your support and engagement are critical to the success of our prevention efforts. We hope that many more of you will join us on Friday April 13, 2023 at 11:45am for our online Intimate Partner Workshop.
You can add the PAFA diversity calendar and/or the banner to your signature block to stay informed of all cultural observances throughout the year. And don't forget to list your pronouns.

Tell Me Who You Are: Sharing Our Stories of Race, Culture, & Identity

by Winona Guo and Priya Vulchi

In this deeply inspiring book, Winona Guo and Priya Vulchi recount their experiences talking to people from all walks of life about race and identity on a cross-country tour of America. Spurred by the realization that they had nearly completed high school without hearing any substantive discussion about racism in school, the two young women deferred college admission for a year to collect first-person accounts of how racism plays out in this country every day--and often in unexpected ways.

In Tell Me Who You Are, Guo and Vulchi reveal the lines that separate us based on race or other perceived differences and how telling our stories--and listening deeply to the stories of others--are the first and most crucial steps we can take towards negating racial inequity in our culture. Featuring interviews with over 150 Americans accompanied by their photographs, this intimate toolkit also offers a deep examination of the seeds of racism and strategies for effecting change.

This groundbreaking book will inspire readers to join Guo and Vulchi in imagining an America in which we can fully understand and appreciate who we are.
