Last Monday, we honored and remembered those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Thank you to all who have served or are remembering loved ones who served.
Habitat for Humanity of Denton County has a special interest in serving the veterans in Denton County and their families. The National Low Income Housing Coalition finds that nearly 4 million of U.S. veterans pay at least 30% of their income toward rent or mortgage, while more than 1.5 million pay at least 50%, which, as you an imagine, puts an enormous strain on any budget. We are honored to offer several programs to help those who have served our country with affordable housing.
In addition to serving veterans with our affordable housing programs, we recruit veterans as employees, volunteers, interns, and more. Our most notable veteran is our ReStore Manager, Kevin Sample. Kevin is a former U.S. Navy second-class petty officer, having served in all three Gulf Wars. Some time after serving, he was homeless for nine months. The Recovery Resource Council helped him get his own apartment and set up a budget. Four months later, after a lot of hard work and perseverance to get back on his feet, Kevin got a job at the ReStore, where he has worked for almost 4 years. With Kevin's personal connection to Habitat's mission, he often advocates in the community for veterans and homelessness. We are blessed and proud to have Kevin as the ReStore Manager; he has worked hard to get where he is today and does not take that for granted.

Granite Huggers is a local granite supplier in Sanger and one of our amazing partners! They help their customers find affordable countertops that add both style and functionality to their space, helping local families and businesses save money on high-quality granite and quartz countertops.
Granite Huggers has donated the granite countertops for several of our recent Habitat homes, and they are now in the process of partnering with us on our office remodel. We are taking every precaution to ensure our office remodel is done cost-effectively, yet will still last for years to come as Habitat's main presence in our local community. One way we are doing this is through our partnerships with amazing vendors like Granite Huggers, who help keep our costs low and product quality high.

We are raising funds to develop 8 acres of vacant land in Southeast Denton and establish a new "Habitat Village" housing development on the property. As many as 35 new affordable homes will be built alongside local families in need via this development. This project involves developing the infrastructure of this neighborhood, including the streets, sidewalks, utilities, proper drainage requirements, and everything else needed to support a neighborhood of 35 homes.
