"The Break Up Song"

Writers, playwrights, artists, and songwriters are basically story tellers. We take our life experiences and encounters complete with its emotions and passions and share them as a social experience in our books, plays, poems, and songs. One common theme, break ups, have filled the shelves at book stores and spawned innumerable chart busting records. Truly, break-ups are a song of heart-breaks, and at times equally entertaining, and a strong inspiration for songwriters.

With this said, my New Year’s resolution is to challenge myself to write my first country song (I’m a blues and jazz man at heart). And secondly to reconfirm my standing resolution to keep a positive attitude. This proved to be a daunting and existential conundrum, since most country songs consist of just a few chords and a sad story.

The moral of my song “Sit Right Down” (The Break Up Song) is simply that we should not hold onto a bad relation like clinging onto debris after a shipwreck. Only to hold on to it like a souvenir from a bad trip. In time, we all learn the fact, that the physical breakup lags well behind the emotional breakup. Though with maturity, we learn it’s best to remember the good times of the relationship regardless if meager, and delete the rest from our memory warehouse. And, to learn from the experience, knowing with maturity, logic and honesty will guide us past our mixed emotions.

My song will take you through the emotional tides of a breakup. So, before I direct you to the Demitasse Band’s performance and rendition of my new song. Take a deep breath, drop your chores and errands, let down your hair, kick off your shoes, and take a sanity break from life to dance to our human condition-regardless of how frail it can be at times Sit Right Down. With a grain of salt, let's dedicate this song to our ex’s and future exe’s. As we try to find the essence of life with that crazy little- thing we call love. My special thanks to Demitasse Musicians Jim Nowak and Dean Snellback, for their excellent musicianship and arrangement.
