Team News:

Grade 7

Dear parents,

We hope you are all staying warm and safe! Thank you to all who attended the virtual parent conferences. It was nice to see many of you and to talk about your child’s progress. We truly appreciate all the kind words we received.

Week of February 2-5

Social Studies: Last week we completed our studies of the United Nations and spent time reviewing the Civil Rights movement. Next week we will be finishing up our focus on post WW 2 America and move on to international trade and alliances.

ELA: Last Wednesday/Thursday, students took a quiz on the elements of literature. Students should check and make sure that they have completed this quiz and turned it in. This week, we will continue reading non-fiction science articles. Students will practice researching topics, creating claims, and filling out pro/con charts for these topics. We will also continue looking at prefixes, suffixes, and root words during independent reading.

MATH: Last week we explored proportional and nonproportional relationships by observing and creating various turtle races. This week students will have a summative on this material on Tuesday or Wednesday. There is a slideshow study guide posted under resources in google classroom for the students to review. They should record any questions for me to address on Monday and Tuesday.

SCIENCE: Last week we practiced using Punnett Squares to learn about probability in offspring. Our labs explored genetics and how traits are passed down from parents. Students learned the difference between Genotypes and Phenotypes, Homozygous and Heterozygous allele pairs, and dominant and recessive traits. Next week we will go deeper into Genetics concepts.

Grade 8

As January wraps up, students continue to be very busy and working hard in their core classes.
In Literacy, students are going to begin a literary analysis essay where they will use text evidence from their independent reading books to analyze authors’ techniques, their relationships with characters, and literary themes.

In Math, we will be starting our next unit on graphing. The students will be using an online graphing calculator to discover the connections between equations of lines and their graphs. They will then apply their knowledge using various interactive websites. These sites will not only allow them to test out their ideas but also make some connections to the real world.

In Science, we wrapped up the penguin project. The students did an amazing job in both their designs and the connections they made to the real world! We have begun a unit on atoms and molecules today as we continue our chemistry unit.

In Social Studies, students finalized their Egypt Portfolios, selecting three artifacts to showcase their learning, and reflected on their process. Then, they set goals to improve their work moving forward. Next week we’ll start our next unit: Ancient Greece!

Please continue to encourage independent reading at home! As always, we thank you for the support you provide at home.

SRMS Student Attendance Expectations 2020-2021
This year at SRMS we will be tracking attendance a little differently than we historically have. This is to ensure your child’s safety in our building and to be consistent across the middle and high schools. If your child will be absent, late, dismissed early, or will miss a class period please use Pickup Patrol to report this absence as an excused absence. Any absences that have not been reported through Pickup Patrol will be marked as unexcused. Teachers will be taking attendance at the beginning of each period. If your child misses one or more classes during the day and it has not been documented through Pickup Patrol, the absence will be marked as unexcused and an automated email will be sent home from Renee LeBlanc. If you get a message and have information or documentation as to why your child’s absence should be excused, please contact Renee LeBlanc at rleblanc@sau17.net.
