Jodi Salzman, Music Teacher
Dear Mack Families,
Students in every grade are busy enjoying music! If you visit our classes, you will see us humming, moving, dancing, patting, and enjoying this wonderful gift God has given us. Our goal in each class is that we endeavor to worship God with all our heart, soul, and mind through the process of discovering, creating, and expressing music. Here’s a taste of what we are learning. I encourage you to read not just what your child is learning but also to the grades your child will enter in the coming years to see the trajectory of what they will be able to do as they develop into sixth graders!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN: Students are moving, clapping, patting, and humming to music and having a lot of fun! They are learning to pat the beat and to differentiate between high and low pitches. They love the stories “Had a Little Rooster” and “Kitty Alone” and enjoy to hum/chant “Chop Chop,” “No More Pie,” “Frog in the Meadow,” and “Listen, Listen.”
KINDERGARTEN: Students learn the definition of “beat”: that it is steady, like their heartbeat. Students are moving and humming to fun songs such as “My Aunt Came Back,” “Pitter Patter,” “Two Little Blackbirds,” and “Eensy Weensy Spider.” They also know the difference between a humming/singing and speaking voice!
FIRST GRADE: Students can keep the beat with songs and chants they have learned and know that the beat is different than the words in a song, thereby moving them into the understanding of rhythm, which has to do with the length of sounds over the beat. They move and clap to fun songs such as “Apple Tree,” “Chocolate,” “2468,” and “Lemonade.” The songs they are learning will lead them to discover and identify their first rhythm symbols and solfege ladder pitches!
SECOND GRADE: Students are moving quickly to learning their next solfege and rhythm concepts after having mastered so, mi, and la, and ta, titi, and rest. They are now trying to figure out a new solfege pitch lower than so, mi, and la and a new rhythm with many sounds on one beat. They love to hum and move to songs such as “Tideo,” “Ding Dong,” and “Paw Paw Patch.”
|
|
THIRD/FOURTH GRADES: Students are becoming stronger with known solfege and rhythm concepts and will soon be learning able to identify new symbols in the coming weeks in both areas. They can hum back specific solfege pitches and name them without the aid of the teacher. This is great ear training development! In the same way, students can quickly clap back a specific set of rhythms and name them at the same time. Third graders love songs such as “Big Fat Biscuit” and “Drunken Sailor,” and fourth-graders enjoy “Car Song” and “Aunty Monica.”
FIFTH/SIXTH GRADES: We are discussing what it means to worship God through music. Questions students write about include: What can we learn about the Creator God as we create this music? What can we discover about God’s Creation in this music? What can we discover about God’s character in this music? Our latest question was “How might God glorify Himself through my performance?” to which students answered, “Maybe if we do well, it will lead others to God,” “If I think, ‘I’m not that good,’ God can use even that,’” “We might glorify God by using our gifts,” and “God uses anything he wants to glorify himself.” Students draw upon their experience of preparing to perform on video a simple instrumental piece on xylophones, glockenspiels, and auxiliary percussion as we discuss these deep and challenging questions. Finally, students are learning a body of songs that will reinforce the solfege and rhythmic ladders. They can’t wait to perform their instrumental pieces soon!

Thank you for taking the time to read about what is happening in the music department! We look forward to singing freely and performing in a live setting soon and are grateful for the music we can enjoy now, even though we are limited. Praise God for his gift of music, and Merry Christmas!

We are happy to welcome the preschoolers back to campus after Thanksgiving break and our remote learning week.
Right before the break the kids got to bag up the food they had donated to the Maltby food bank and load it into a wagon for delivery. It was a fitting ending to our month long focus on Thanksgiving and thankfulness!

Mrs. Wasson and Sandy interacting with their class during our virtual learning week
|
Mrs. Kaskes’ class is also learning how to take surveys with a focus on using certain math words, recording data, practicing social skills, and respecting others’ opinions. Meanwhile, in addition to learning about Baby Jesus’s birth, the three-year-old class will be learning about the triangle shape through fine motor skills, poems, and artwork.
|
|
Now we are turning our attention to Advent and the true meaning of Christmas. The children in each class will be doing a variety of activities, including dressing up in Nativity clothes, making ornaments, and pretending to wrap presents for Jesus’s birthday. There will be plenty of fun, festive bling, and gingerbread along the way!
