DEED to begin accepting Main Street COVID Relief Grant applications soon
Minnesota Main Street COVID Relief Grants
This program is not currently accepting applications. The online application portal will open by 10:00 a.m. on September 20, 2021.

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) will oversee the Main Street Covid Relief Grants Program approved by the Minnesota State Legislature and signed by Gov. Tim Walz on June 30, 2021.

This program will make available $10,000 - $25,000 grants to Minnesotan owned and operated businesses that can demonstrate financial hardship as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. A total $64,200,000 is available for grant applications selected for consideration through a computer-generated, randomized selection process.
Applicants that have not received assistance through previous relief programs will be prioritized for consideration. These programs include the Small Business Emergency Loan program, the Small Business Relief Grant Program, the Movie Theater and Convention Center Relief Grant program, and the County Relief Grant program.
Applicants will receive a grant amount based on the number of full-time equivalent (FTEs) employees on staff.
  • $10,000 – 6 FTEs or less.
  • $15,000 – Between 7 and 49 FTEs
  • $20,000 – Between 50 and 99 FTEs
  • $25,000 – Between 100 and 200 FTEs
Applications will be reviewed and awards will be disbursed and administered by qualified local and regionally based nonprofit organizations. Grant funds received by individual businesses shall be used for working capital to support payroll expenses, rent, mortgage payments, utility bills, and other similar expenses that occur or have occurred since March 12, 2020, in the regular course of business. These are grants and no repayment will be required.
Additional eligibility requirements and application information can be found at DEED’s Main Street COVID Relief Grants Program page.

Webinar next week:
How Biden's tax hikes will hurt Minnesota businesses

John Kirchner, Vice President
U.S. Chamber of Commerce
Last month the business community had cause for celebration, as the Senate passed an historic, bipartisan infrastructure package that will make long-overdue investments in our nation’s physical infrastructure. Seeing such an important piece of legislation pass with overwhelming bipartisan support is a rare feat in an increasingly polarized Washington, and one that deserves to be celebrated.

Unfortunately, that bipartisan moment didn’t last long. Shortly after passage of the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act, the Senate passed a gargantuan $3.5 trillion budget resolution on a party-line vote. The resolution calls for an unprecedented expansion of government spending that will likely be funded by an equally-unprecedented tax hike on American businesses.

The administration claims that its proposed tax increases will only hit big corporations and the rich, but the truth is these tax increases will be paid for by workers and families through lost jobs and lower wages. Furthermore, the overwhelming majority of c-corps are small businesses, with 84% having fewer than 20 employees. The burden of these tax hikes will fall hardest on small business.

Raising the corporate tax rate from 21% to 28% will also put Minnesota businesses at a severe competitive disadvantage. For example, if the corporate rate were increased to 28%, Minnesota companies would face a combined state and federal rate of 37.8%. That would be higher than the corporate rate of every other developed nation on earth, making it harder for Minnesota manufacturers to compete with foreign companies.

The Biden administration also proposes nearly doubling the tax rate on capital gains, hitting approximately two-thirds of capital investment in the U.S. This will dampen investments in Minnesota start-ups and hurt families saving for retirement; looking to buy a home; or saving for their kids’ college education.

The capital gains rate hike would also apply to the transfer of assets of family-owned businesses at death. This would threaten the ability of the next generation of Minnesotans to keep family-owned grocery stores, farms, restaurants, and other businesses up and running.

The bottom line is that raising taxes now will stop the recovery dead in its tracks. Congress should build upon the momentum of the bipartisan infrastructure bill and abandon the partisan spending spree that leaves businesses holding the bill. Now is the time to contact your representatives and tell them not to raise taxes that will hurt small businesses, workers, and families.
