News from our Director of F & B

February is here! And with it some fun food and cocktail holidays to enjoy. This month we celebrate Mardi Gras & Fat Tuesday, Ash Wednesday & Valentine’s Day. Chef Devin will be featuring some Mardi Gras, Creole fare as specials throughout the month leading up to Fat Tuesday. As the schedule makers would have it this year, Fat Tuesday falls on a regularly scheduled Happy Hour date?! We will have a Happy Hour menu loaded with Louisiana drink and food favorites. Including one of my own cocktail favorites, the Sazerac.

The Sazerac was invented in 1838, by Antoine Peychard, in his shop at 437 Royal Street, New Orleans. There are many variations of The Sazerac, originally designed to use Cognac, before moving to Rye Whiskey as cognac became difficult to obtain, but it is still known as America’s oldest cocktail. For our variation in the Sunset Lounge we use Buffalo Trace Bourbon, hold true to the Absinthe rinse with Pernod’s Absinthe, and secured Peychard’s Bitters to complete the mix. While the original Sazerac was served neat, we are doing over ice, as a believer that water opens up the flavor profiles of the other ingredients. You are welcome to try it either way, the drink is built over ice and poured into a rocks glass, even neat, it will be cold.

Our Wednesday Tradition of Fish & Chips lands on Ash Wednesday (thanks again, schedule makers!). A perfect match for a night that calls for a fish fry! As we enter the Lent Season, we will be providing some great fish specials for Friday evening dining.

Though the Valentine’s Dinner Dance was canceled this year due to the ongoing pandemic, we will still be celebrating Valentine’s Day. Look for our Valentine’s Prix Fixe menu coming soon, it will be available Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, February 12, 13, and 14, as well as for takeout. The extra dining days allow for us to continue to space members out responsibly in our dining areas. Your Clubhouse remains a safe place to dine out when the mood strikes.

Cheers,
Ben
Director of Food and Beverage

News from our Pro & Director of Golf

Across the country, golf has had a resurgence in popularity prompted by an unusual 2020. Sugar Mill is no different as rounds of golf exceeded 2019 by 4,000. This is one of the positives that has emerged from the pandemic of 2020.

With this increase of traffic on the course, it is extra important to be diligent in the etiquette of course care that is expected of a golfer.
Increased traffic along with single riders in carts does create additional wear and tear on the golf course. Here some basic reminders as you enjoy your round.

Golf Course Care

Fairways
·        Fill your divots with the complimentary sand provided and smooth level to the ground. If you run out don’t fret, refill stations are conveniently placed throughout all 27 holes.
·        Drive your cart away from worn areas that are visible with the increased cart traffic.

Greens
·        Repair your ball marks plus 1 additional one.
·        Have all four tires on the cart paths that are provided around the greens.

Bunkers
·        Rake the area of the bunker that has been disturbed as if you had to play a shot from that position.
·        Be sure to knock the sand off the bottom of your shoes after you leave the bunker and before you walk on the green.

Nothing new above, but does make a difference if everyone is doing their part as a golfer. The saying rings true that “It takes a Village”.

Sincerely,
Derek Morrison
Director of Golf

RAINBOWS end at Sugar Mill CC
A note from the Tennis Chair Barb Hubbard:
SMCC Members,

 Hello from the courts,

We have monthly socials on the tennis and pickleball courts, so please come on out to safely socialize with friends you haven't seen in a while. We had an interesting turn out on January 11th. The pickleball players outnumbered the tennis players 3 - 1 and that makes me very happy. You say why? Well, that means our pickleball groups are growing and the more the merrier. We had a great time getting to know each other.

Our next social is scheduled for February 22nd and we are doing something different. We are inviting players to a socially distanced POT LUCK. Please bring a dish and we will have one person be the server who will be gloved and masked for your safety. They promised me we would be getting warmer weather so please come out and have some fun.

Now on to the big event on March 10th. Our Tennis and Pickleball Tournament Cancer Fundraiser.   This is the first time that Tennis & Pickleball will join the Club for their Annual Cancer Fundraiser and we are hoping we can take a Slam at Cancer and get this event off to a great start.

Planned events of the day :

  •   Great Tennis and Pickleball starting at 10:00am (Our Tennis Pro Steve will set the teams according to level of play)

  •   Reserved seating - We only have a few select chairs available for a front row view under the Gazebo - $20 (includes a Blood Mary/ Mimosa)

  •   Reserved patio tables w/ umbrella - We will have a few select places where these tables can go but you and a group can sit and enjoy the games. Prices range from $50 - 100 and each person gets a drink too.

  •   Bloody Mary/Mimosa Bar - Donations will be encouraged

  •   Tennis/Pickleball basket - This basket is valued at $300 and will be customized with either a tennis racket or pickleball racket for the winner. There will be other goodies in the basket too. We will have the raffle tickets available next week so you can get your chances in now. Drawing will occur after the tournament is over.

  •   Special COVID mask will be for sale with the SMCC logo. A mere $10 for you to look good while staying safe.

  •   Boozie Baker cupcakes will also be available for donation

Click link below for our flyer if you are interested. If you'd rather reach out to myself, my email is hrtimecop64@yahoo.com or cell 571-238-0448. Please help kick off this fundraiser to help beat cancer.

I look forward to seeing everyone on the courts!

thank you

Sugar Mill an “Activities Hub”: 20 Minutes to Fun!
by Mike Schmidt (SMCC Member )
" BIKING"
Community friends. In the past few newsletters I wrote about how Sugar Mill is a wonderful “Recreation Hub”: many healthy and outdoor things to do within just 20 minutes from were we live. And, all these activities can be done completely alone and solo: totally “personally distanced”... by as much as you want. I started down my list of the things I do with Golf (of course) and Archery (really?). This month, it’s Biking. Read on....

When I was a kid we rode our bicycles everywhere: none of this current-day parenting, being hauled in a mini-van to ball practice or swimming lessons. You walked or took your bike: a “right thing” to do, right? I remember my mother sending us off to school in Wisconsin when it was below zero and snowing...over the frozen Fox river bridge... and me with only one mitten because (of course) I’d lost the other one somewhere. “Stop Whining!”, I heard as we peddled away into the storm. We rode on roads and sidewalks, but also across fields and streams and construction sites. We were, in fact, cross-country “mountain biking”, but just didn’t know it. One later memorable biking-memory I have was riding with a daughter on a Saturday mornings. We’d start somewhere out of the city and “straight-line it”: pick a spot in the distanced and go for it on our bikes...not stopping for anything in the way...fences or water or woods. We’d come home scuffed-up and dirty, but, wow, what Fun!

Barbara and I got into biking early-on in our relationship and rode the flatlands and hills of Indiana around our small farm outside of Indianapolis. We even went so far as to sign up and trudge up and down hills through a week-long Maine coast ride with Vermont Cycling, inc. WHEW! We continue to ride here in Florida on the roads, beaches and trails, and also in Vermont where we summer. But over the last years the hills seem to have somehow gotten steeper, the wind stronger (and always in your face), and the rides significantly longer. Wonder why....hmmm.

So what to do? Buy electric bikes!

These are great fun. Using the computer settings on the bike one can ride with no power assist or full power assist or somewhere in between; or just use the gears on the bike as you would with the bike you had as a kid. (Of course, again, mine had no fancy multi-gearing like the North-side kids). When we ride, our goal is to use as little battery power as possible and to leave with four battery power bars lit and come home with no less than three bars showing; I.e., still getting a workout. But when the wind does turn against you or the hills do become more steep, having the “Assist” is nice. In fact, damn nice. I find I ride more now than I did before and still get plenty of exercise. (Note: Do expect to get some flak from peddling purists. To counter, I believe they sell small signs that fit behind the saddle of your electric bike that say: “I am not a wuss... I’m just old“).

Now, where to ride around the “Hub”?

Right outside your door is the beautiful Sugar Mill community with it’s many roads and paths, most all which are lightly traveled and safe. Straight pedal in high gear on the main roads to work up a sweat, or cut and wind through the twists and turns and cul de sacs of neighborhoods: sun on your back, wind in your hair, bugs in your teeth etc., etc., etc. But no more than a five minute ride through and out of the community and you’re riding the New Smyrna Beach multi-use trail which can take you all the way to the Winn- Dixie store; and, by doing some careful road riding, you can make it all the way down to the beach. Or, put your bike on a car carrier and that’ll take you in less than fifteen minutes to Daytona State College where you can pick up the “Cross Florida Bike Trail” That trail system can take you hundreds of miles west or north or south on paved, not much traveled, and very scenic rides. Once again hauling the bike gets you to the beach where are you can ride miles of hard pack sand, with the breeze blowing and the waves rolling and the surf breaking. Where else does this exist... Really! I find North Beach is the best place to start. It’s pretty empty in the mornings, few cars are parked around, and you can ride all the way to the rocky causeway where you can sit on the stones, watch the fishermen and surfers, and see the Ponce Inlet lighthouse over your left shoulder. Bring a juice bottle and a granola bar and have a mini-picnic...and throw some to the sea gulls....come on!

P.S. Next month will be “Kayaking from the Sugar Mill Hub”

Love Martini
by Members Choice
INGREDIENTS

  1. 1/2 shot (0.75fl oz or 22ml) Malibu Rum
  2. 1/2 shot (0.75fl oz or 22ml) Peach Schnapps
  3. 1/2 shot (0.75fl oz or 22ml) Citron Vodka/Plain Vodka
  4. 3 shots (4.5fl oz or 132ml) Cranberry Juice
  5. 2 strawberries, for garnish
  6. A wedge of lime (optional)
  7. Sugar to rim the glass (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. - To make strawberry hearts for the garnish cut a small "v" to remove the stem of the strawberry. Then cut it into slices.
  2. - You can rim your martini glass with sugar (if you want)- just use a lime/lemon wedge along the rim of the glass to get it wet and dip the glass in a plate with sugar.
  3. - Gently mix the Malibu Rum, Peach Schnapps, Vodka and Cranberry Juice together in a shaker (over ice if your Cranberry juice is not cold and pour it into the prepared glass.
  4. - Garnish your love martini with a couple strawberry hearts and a strawberry on the rim! Enjoy!

NOTES
  1. For the strawberry garnish on the rim of the glass, simply make a cut half way up the bottom of a strawberry keeping the rest of it intact including the stem
  2. You can use either plain Vodka or any citrus flavored vodkas too.
  3. Because of the sweetness of this drink it doesn't really need a sugar rim...I just did it cos it's pretty!
  4. Drink responsibly. Don't drink and drive.
