Sacramento Literacy Foundation's Summer Reading Grant Opportunity

Children's literacy in Sacramento County is in need of attention and solutions. In 2019, only 49% of children in Sacramento County were able to read at their grade level. The top three factors that impact a child 's ability to read at their grade level are: summer reading, kindergarten readiness & school attendance. Funding for Sacramento Literacy Foundations children's literacy efforts are provided predominantly by its Children's Literacy Endowment. This funding is available for qualified activities, such as project-specific grants for organizations that provide summer reading programs for children & youth from birth through age 18 in Sacramento County. For more information and to apply, click here.

Should Sacramento County Adopt Laura's Law?
"Laura's Law" would allow the courts to order certain individuals (18 years and older only) with serious mental illness (and that also meet specific criteria) to comply with outpatient treatment. This treatment (known as Assisted Outpatient Treatment [AOT]) includes intense services for a set amount of time. This would also allow the courts to commit the mental health system to providing the required AOT treatment.

In 2001, Laura Wilcox, age 19, was shot and killed while working in a mental-health clinic by a man with severe, untreated mental illnesss. Not long after this tragedy occurred, a law was passed that allowed counties to adopt the AOT, but Sacramento County never opted into the program.
