On Tuesday afternoon, the afternoon of Shimini Atzeret, while I was enjoying reading a book outside, I heard loud singing coming from my house. I paused to listen and found that my 5th grade daughter was teaching my 3rd grade daughter a tune for part of Hallel that she learned during Sukkot at school. A few minutes later they came out to share it with me. It was loud, off-key and absolutely beautiful! It made me so glad that my children get to attend a school that helps them proudly celebrate our Jewish traditions. 

Below you will read a bit about what some of our classes have been studying the past few weeks. While we have enjoyed several days off to celebrate holidays, and have had joyous celebrations of the holidays in school, our students have also learned quite a lot. I hope you enjoy reading about what our students are learning and seeing the pictures of the students in the Silver snapshots.

2nd-8th Grade ELA & Social Studies

The 2nd and 3rd graders at The Silver Academy have been working hard in English Language Arts. They started the year learning about the writing process. Students brainstormed ideas about ice cream, wrote a rough draft, edited their writing to make it more interesting and created their final copy. They were very proud of their work! Now, we are learning about story elements such as character, setting, and theme. We are working on finding each of these elements in the stories we read in class. We will build on those skills even more as we write a class narrative poem.

In Social Studies the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students have been learning about the Southwest region of the United States. We discussed the climate and land features that make this region so unique. Students are working hard in teams on a state project. They will share what they learn about their assigned state with their classmates.

In 7th and 8th grade, students are learning about the history that surrounds the Trail of Tears. We have discussed the idea of removal and what it means, the experience of the various Native American nations involved, as well as Andrew Jackson and the Indian Removal Act. Students will begin the novel, How I Became a Ghost, written by Tim Tingle, a Choctaw author. We will compare the experiences we have learned about with the Choctaw characters in this fictional novel.

2nd & 3rd Grade Judaic Studies

Since the year began we have been very excited to learn about the special holidays that take place during the month of Tishrei with iTaLAM. iTalAM’s various activities helped us recall previous knowledge that we know from 1st grade and to add on new important information and skills such as identifying when a Jewish year begins and ends, what the Shofar sounding during the month of Elul reminds us and what we should put on the Rosh Hashana table.
