Dear Residents,

There has been an increase in crime across Long Island over the last year. We have experienced it in the Village with a few car thefts and items taken from residents’ vehicles. Our Police patrol the Village streets 24 hours a day watching for suspicious activity. I wanted to share with you an event that occurred this past Saturday morning. The following is a written account of what happened sent to me by Police Chief, Chris Jack:

"Geary – July 16, 2022 – 0430 hours

While on routine patrol at approximately 4:30 am on Saturday July 16th, Huntington Bay Police Officer Fintan Geary came upon three male subjects, who do not reside in the Village, riding bicycles south on Bay Avenue in the vicinity of Kaiser Hill. After initially observing the subjects, PO Geary took notice of a New York State license plate sticking out of a basket on one of the bicycles. This particular license plate happened to be familiar to PO Geary because it was unique, and he knew it belonged to a Village resident. Upon attempting to stop the individuals, they tried to flee but PO Geary was able to grab two of them. The third subject continued to flee south on Bay Avenue. PO Geary immediately radioed neighboring Suffolk County police units to assist in locating the third subject. That third individual later returned to the scene of the encounter on his own accord.

While inquiring about the subjects’ actions, PO Geary asked if they would open the backpacks they were wearing. Without hesitation, the subjects opened their backpacks and revealed several pieces of mail that were addressed to Village residents. PO Geary arrested the individuals, and with the assistance of Suffolk County police units, transported the subjects to SCPD 2nd Precinct for arrest processing.

During arrest processing it was determined that the subjects were juveniles, age 15, 16 and 17 years old. Further discovered while processing the arrest, PO Geary found the subjects to be in possession of several stolen credit cards, stolen cell phones, a laptop, electronic tablet, contents of stolen Amazon packages, and other various stolen items. The subjects’ parents were notified regarding the circumstances of the arrest and responded to the 2nd Precinct. The subjects were interviewed by detectives from the 2nd Precinct, and it was determined that these individuals have been rummaging through cars and stealing mail from the greater Huntington area since February. The individuals were charged with several felony counts to include grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. "

Officer Geary did an outstanding job by apprehending these individuals who were in the Village that morning.  Stolen items were returned to the owners.  A job well done!

Please remember to lock your vehicles and don't leave valuable items in them. Also, please immediately report to our Police any suspicious activity you might see- no matter what the time.

Regards,

Herb Morrow
