NEWS - November 15, 2021
There's a variety of subjects this week from product reviews to new features in Premiere to a very cool tip about Final Cut Pro. The details are below.

By the way, last week's article comparing the speed of M1 MacBook Pros with earlier computers set records for views; now numbering into the tens of thousands. If you haven't read it yet, here it is.

Plus, a related article on how to configure an M1 MacBook Pro for video editing.

In the news:

Blackmagic Design announced new versions of their URSA Broadcast G2 cameras. Priced at $3,995, this is a "next generation professional broadcast camera with 6K digital film sensor that brings digital film quality to both traditional and online broadcasters. The 3 cameras in 1 design allows it to work as a 4K production camera, a 4K studio camera or a 6K digital film camera." (BMD press release)

Re:Vision Effects announced full support for macOS Monterey, Final Cut Pro 10.6 and v22 of After Effects. However, current versions of both installers and software are required.

NewBlue FX launched Titler Live 5 Present. "Titler Live 5 Present delivers affordable, broadcast-quality graphics and video overlays for businesses, classrooms, event production studios, religious gatherings, town halls, virtual meetings, and more." (NewBlue FX website)

Audio over IP (AoIP) continues to gain steam. TV Technology has a report discussing what this is and why it is increasingly important.

Last week's webinar covering the New Features in Adobe Premiere Pro was well-received. We spent time going into a variety of new features, plus a closer look at the improvements in speech-to-text transcripts and captioning.

Due to the upcoming holidays, webinars will resume on Dec. 1.

This product review looks at the new OWC Mercury Pro U.2 Dual RAID. This high-performance storage system delivers 2 GB per second of transfer speed. But, it still needs a bit of work - and I managed to break my unit. Here are the details.

In another review, I have a quick look at the LG 27UK500 video monitor. Great colors, but other decisions by LG make this less than useful for video editors.

In the first of two excerpts from my New Features in Premiere Pro webinar, here's a look at the new Simplify Sequence feature. This can take, ah, a somewhat messy timeline and make it look a lot nicer. Plus, there's no risk. Learn more.

In the second excerpt, here's a look a hidden keyboard shortcut that can save you time trimming in Premiere – if you can only find it. Here's what this does, where it is and how to turn it on. (Yup, it's turned off by default.)

Finally, Adam sent me this tip. He was suffering system freezes when converting and importing Libraries into Final Cut Pro. He not only described his problem, he also provided the solution.

I have always enjoyed fall. Especially now, when I can watch the trees change color. It reminds me that everything has a season. Technology changes constantly. New products make our jobs easier. But the underlying craft remains the same: to create compelling stories that others want to watch. Great stories lurk everywhere - especially outside Hollywood. Our job is to be observant enough to find them, then skilled enough to turn them into watchable video.

Until next Monday, stay healthy and edit well.
