One White Plains
Comprehensive Plan Update
The City has kicked off the process to create One White Plains, the city’s new comprehensive plan. A comprehensive plan is an official, long range planning document that provides policy guidance for the future of the City. It will provide the foundation for decisions on development, zoning and capital spending and more. Public input is critical to ensure that the priorities expressed in the plan are consistent with the community’s vision for the future.

Love Your Block Grant Will Help White Plains Build Stronger Neighborhoods
The City of White Plains has been selected to participate in the Love Your Block grant program. The program is an initiative of Cities of Service, which was founded by New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in 2009 and is now part of Johns Hopkins University. White Plains was one of eight cities across the U.S. selected for this award.
The goal of the Love Your Block program is to build stronger neighborhoods, one block at a time, through partnerships with community groups, neighborhood associations and residents to repair, remediate, or otherwise address negative neighborhood conditions and spur neighborhood-driven change. As part of the award, White Plains will receive funding over two years that will be used to provide mini-grants to neighborhood and community groups to help them accomplish neighborhood or block-specific improvement projects.
As part of Love Your Block, we are recruiting for 2 positions, a Love Your Block Fellow and an AmeriCorps VISTA member, who will work with the city Planning Department, Mayor’s Office, and other city departments to build capacity and awareness for the program. We are hoping to attract candidates who live and/or work in White Plains because they bring to the table a familiarity with our city. We are seeking candidates who are enthusiastic, organized, and have a passion for community interaction.
Love Your Block Fellow - Working closely with the Love Your Block team, the Fellow will be responsible for coordinating a robust community engagement strategy and facilitating ongoing programmatic activities. This is a two-year position beginning in November 2021. View the full position description here.
AmeriCorps VISTA Member – The VISTA member will work alongside senior level city staff and non-profits, build community and organizational capacity, and be a part of a nationwide network of Cities of Service AmeriCorps VISTA members. This one-year position begins in November 2021. View the full position description here.

Spotlight on Jacob Purdy Park
Jacob Purdy Historical Park is located on Park Avenue south of its intersection with Kirby Terrace. The park was developed by the City of White Plains to accommodate the relocation of the historic Jacob Purdy House.
The house sits on property that was once part of the original Purdy Farm. It is used for historical programming and as the headquarters of the White Plains Historical Society.
Purdy House was built in 1721 by Samuel Horton and sold to Samuel Purdy in 1730. The original farm was 132 acres and the house stood on Spring Street at the foot of Purdy Hill (now Church Street Hill), The Purdy House remained in the Purdy Family until 1869.
Samuel's son, Jacob joined the Westchester Militia in 1775 serving until the end of the American Revolution. He volunteered the use of his father's house as a place to meet and store supplies. General Washington was headquartered at Purdy House during the three-day Battle of White Plains in October 1776 and again from July 21 to Sept. 16, 1778. General Israel Putnam also utilized the house for his troops during the Battle of White Plains.
In 1979 the House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places,

Going Green in White Plains . . .
White Plains Mayor Tom Roach is seen here learning about the first bank of lithium-ion battery storage units installed in New York State at the Avalon White Plains, a 407-unit rental apartment building on Barker Ave.
The battery bank discharges at peak hours to support the electricity grid when under stress; and re-charges at off-peak times to take advantage of low cost, low carbon emission power. It also serves as a generator in the event of power outages.
Congratulations to AvalonBay and AI innovator Logical Buildings on this green achievement!
